Hana's grafting in 2014/2015
Re: Hana's grafting in 2014/2015
Hylocereus stock
The success rate of seedling grafting was more than 95%.
I think you can achieve this level of the success rate for any stocks if you could fine an appropriate grafting method to meet the stock.
Hylocereus stocks are propagated from cuttings.
I experienced virus infection problem supposed by the cutting knife sterilization failure.
Black spots appeared on the stock at first and moved up to scions also.
I stopped to use Hylocereus becouase of the reason.
Pereskiopsis stock.
Pereskiopsis stocks are also propagated by cuttings but I have never experienced virus infection problem.
I am not sure the reason.
Pereskia stock
You can not graft very young seedlings.
You need 10 mm diameter seedlings at least, 1 year old seedlings.
If you expected early flowering of the scion, you have to graft very young scions.
I graft 1 month old seedlings, 2~4 mm diameter to get early flowering on scions.
Pereskia stocks do not meet with my requirement.

Re: Hana's grafting in 2014/2015
Thank you for your answers.
I have grafted some seedlings on pereskiopsis stocks and they have taken well but the problem is that the pereskiopsis cuttings I made aren't growing well. They don't like my climate and if grown indoors they get skinny thus not suitable for grafting.
I want to find a hardy stock for my seedlings. I tried to graft on opuntia compressa unrooted pads but it failed. My next try is grafting on opuntia compressa but I'll use rooted pads and graft on new growth.

Interesting motivation! I'd like to ask though. Do you know how young a seelding need be if early flowering should be expected? Does it depend on the species? About when are they getting too old in your experience?
Re: Hana's grafting in 2014/2015
It depends upon species.
Some species are in flower in spring and some others are in autumn.
The seedling grafting is carried out in early spring normally and you can see flowers:
-Spring flowering species e.g. Asrophytum-next spring, 1 year later after the grafting
-Autumn flowering species e.g. Ariocarpus-next autumn, 6~7 months later after the grafting
You can graft 2 days old seedling to get early flowering.
I use this method for an "Early flowering competition".
I graft seedlings within 40 days old to get early flowering.
I am not sure the limitation of too old because I never tested the limitation.

One of 7 grafted offsets, Aztekium hintonii
It passed the winter solstice, seems to grow continuously.
The current size is 5 cm in diameter.

Hi.
As you are an experienced grafter, I'll ask you another question.
Have you ever used opuntia compressa as a stock or any other opuntia ? I have trouble grafting on this stock. And I read several times that on opuntia stocks, grafts can stall after having shown new growth. Have you ever experienced that ?

I've grafted on opuntia subulata with good results, but that were just two grafts from summer last year. I know this isn't much information, but i hope it helps.

G'morning Lophophytum
I have never used Opuntia as grafting stocks.
We can not keep Opuntia species in here.

It is mid of winter in here but some Ariocarpus scions are still in flower.
I took these photos in this afternoon.
Ariocarpus fissuratus v intermedius
Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus
An Astrophytum myriostigma monstrose is also continued to grow.

Nice log. I love the information, and pictures. Do you have any updates on the astrophytum asterias (red flowered x hanazono kabuto)?
Thanks,
Will

I am quite sure "the color of flower is red" but I have to wait until September.
Here are photos.

These astros look so beautiful and happy. Congrats.
Can't wait to sow red flowering asterias seeds.
