Cactus Nursery in Tucson

Post by Franj »

Hi all :D

I visited Bachs Cactus Nursery in Tucson, Arizona this weekend. I built a little page where I can share some pics. Here it is.

Hi!

Nice pictures! Is it possible that your unknown Mammillaria is Mammillaria geminispina? (http://www.tucson-gardener.com/Bachs/Acquisition008.jpg)

Hi Frnaj:

Wonderfull pics. I never been in the States, but when you send pictures of Arizona, I start thinking in change the pattern of my trips and cross the border.

I agree with Die-Ter. Your unknown Mamm. looks like M. geminispina.

Thanks all :D

After looking at some pics I tend to agree on the Mammillaria ID. Never saw one with spines that long though. Then again it's kind of weirdly shaped to start with. That's what I liked about it.

Hello Franj,

congratulations to your new plants. Of cause you had to buy some

The Haworthia and the Tephrocactus I would like to have, too.

I've got one question on your pictures because there aren't any tags with names in the pots. Isn't that strange for a nursery? Our nurseries always have the little white tags in the pots. Only the pots in supermarkets are without names.

Hi Polly :D

Actually it's somewhat backward from what you are used to here. Nothing is labeled in the main greenhouses. They label them when they sell them, and half the time they get it wrong! LOL

That's one of the reasons we come here. To learn the correct names of our plants.

Hey Bill :D

If you ever get out this way look me up. I'll give you the grand tour of Tucsons specialty nurseries. Just be sure to bring your checkbook. Or better yet the American Express. And maybe a medium sized U-Haul truck to cart it all back to KC.

Franj, I have been staring at your picture of the 'birthday cake Mammillaria' for a long time now. It is one of the most amazing things I've seen in a while. Maybe it would be a good idea to put it in the ID forum?

great photos

Couldn't that one be Mammillaria orcuttii? By the way, you misspelled haseltoniana on your page. And I think you can be sure that number one on the grounds is spinosissima.

Hi, Franj, thank you very much for those pictures. The nursery looks... huge ! I was about to say that I'm envious but after all, it's a very good thing that I don't live too close to this place or I would spend more money than I have :D

Hi, Dominique,

yes, you are right! That is always a real disastre visiting a nursery. You go there and after ten minutes you find it impossible to keep to your resolve.

Last summer my son and I went to Weimar for holidays. Weimar is the town where Goethe and Schiller lived, Germany's most important poets. But Weimar is very close to Erfurt where the Haage-nursery is located.
Lukas and I decided to visit the nursery the very last day of our holidays but because of (not really) bad wheather and after some days packed with culture we changed our minds and went on a rainy afternoon to Erfurt. We had some difficulties to find the nursery and as it was late afternoon we thought just to have a look.
After two hours my car was packed with cacti. We cancelled the last three days in our hotel and found it really difficult to get our luggage into the car. All the way home (650 km)Lukas had a large Melocactus on his knees and a big pot with Selenicereus between his feet!

Coming thursday Lukas and I are going to visit "Kakteenland" in Steinfeld near Wissembourg...

Greetings,

Polly

Franj, they are great shots, there are some nice (and old) plants there. You scored well also, your unknown Mamm is definitely geminispina, the form "nobilis" has longer spines.
Check out this link.

Franj,

I'll definitely look you up if I get that far south. I fear you are right about getting a u-haul to bring back all the souveneirs (cacti)I would acquire in Arizona . As a kid I lived in the Phoenix area but was more interested in snakes and tarantulas back then :-s .

Hi Faslimy :D
That plant fascinated me too. At the resolution of the original pic you can zoom in and the wool looks like wind driven snow across a grove of Pine trees. I agree It's mezmerising. I don't think I have to add another post to the ID forum. This post seems to be getting enough attention. We'll ID it. I have to check out DieTer-Xz's suggestion when I have time.

Hi DieTer-Xz :D
Thanks for the spelling correction. I'll get it fixed.

Hi CP :D
Thanks for the compliment and your addition to a positive ID. It was the long spines that threw me off. Now I can't wait to see what this does in my garden.

Hey Bill :D
Somehow I suspected you were a former Arizonan. Snakes and tarantulas? Been there :D
I can remember one night about 20 years ago, cruising a lonely desert road at night. I came to a spot where in the headlights the road seemed to be moving. I stopped the car and got out with a flashlight. It turned out to be dozens of Tarantulas marching across the road. Like a mass migration. Weirdest thing I've ever seen.

Snakes on the other hand, I definately shy away from :D

Bachs Nursery

Post by edbartlett »

I live a couple of blocks from Bachs. They get plenty of my business. I love their potting soil though I amend it with about 1/4 more pumice (from Backs too) than they use because I still tend to be a bit liberal with the spring water I use on my collection. I've been in Tucson one year and have become hooked on cacti and succulents. My dear wife is finally complaining about having to get a larger house for me and my collection.
Thank you,
