Hanazono's cacti 2010

Post by Hanazono »

I bought 20 seeds of Ariocarpus retusus v furfuraceus cv Suguri Cauliflower and sown seeds on 11th August 2005.
I could graft only 2 seedlings, all others were dead.
This photo is one of 2, taken photo on 26th March 2010. It is still young but the diameter is around 17 cm, showing cauliflowers' character.
Image
I tried to increase numbers and crossed the 2 plants. I collected seeds and sown on 4th September 2008. I grafted several seedlings. The photo taken on 26th March is one of them, showing cauliflower character aslo.
I think cauliflower gene is quite positive.

I collected more seeds last year and sown seeds on 11th September 2009.
The following photos taken today are own-root seedlings and a grafted seedling.

Yes, nice! You might end up with a new special cultivar from all those seedlings too.

miracle kabuto

Post by Hanazono »

I have increased numbers of Ariocarpus in my collection but Astrophytum asterias has still been my main collection. I seleced best 35 of asterias cv miracle kabutos. I sowed seeds 30th September 2006. Miracle kabuto grew very slowly. The diameter is 4~5 cm.

The A. asterias are particularly beautiful plants.
It’s not the fall that kills you; it’s the sudden stop at the end.

Bravo! Spectacular job growing these beautiful plants. It's especially impressive to see people purposefully crossing and propagating. Beautiful cultivars!

After sowing I don't know how many seeds I've sown I only have one A. asterias that has lived for a year.

I am in awe of your plants! Beautiful!

Tim
If you feed a lot of water in summer, A. asterias grows quite quickly but it is easily rotting becouse it has a thick tap root.
Japanese use a special method to minimize rotting. I also use same method.
1 year old seedlings: No roots cutting, just repotting
2 years old seedlings: Cut tap root
Before tap root cutting

After tap root cutting

3 years old ones, fine roots only
No tap root and you can feed a lot of water in hot season. I cut roots slightly every year after, including 3 years old seedlings.

wow! Fantastic trick in cultivation, to remove the taproot to reduce rotting. I had never heard of that before.
