Pediocactis in bloom

Post by Charles »

Here are some photos of my spring garden. It is still too cold in Sparks for the cactus to fill out.

Flowers

My garden is starting to bloom. But I had an outbreak of mealy bugs. I have been spraying the garden for about a month. I think most of the mealy bugs are dead now.

I have an interesting plant I hope will bloom soon.
It is a hybrid of
Echin. viridiflorus X Ech. viridiflorus var. correllii.

I had about 200 seedlings but all but a dozen died. One seedling is growing fast and tall like the E. Correllii but has the coloring of the Echin. viridiflorus. This should be a very hardy cactus.
Oh here is a photo of my Pediocactus s. minor.

Here is a short of a part of my cactus. Note the huge Trigs.

I'd love something like that. I was just looking at some pictures of a rock garden in Slovenia that was very similar. But all the plants were Pediocacti  Spectacular in spring but a little sad looking in July,

My pediocactus do well all year in Sparks NV. They seem to like elevation above 4000 feet.(1219 m)
They also like a little shade in the hot months and not much water.
I also have a few P.knowltonii seedlings. I'm not sure how they will do here. I had about 20 seedlings
and now only have 4 in the ground and two in a pot.

I killed the other seedlings by putting them in the sun in July-August and watering them.

By the way, my email address is no longer jcnreno@charter.net.
It is censussearcher@gmail.com. I have tried many time to change it but I have no luck.
Anyone know how I can change my email address on my profile page?
Below is a photo of my Echin. coccineus v. paucispinus from Culberson Co. TX. I just measured it.
It is 32 inches wide and 17 inches high.(81cm X 43cm)
It just keeps getting bigger. I've had to move plants out of its way. It has never produced seeds. Could it be a male. :?:

Hi Charles
Great to see you posted pictures of your Pedio. nigrospina before I got around to it. Your pictures are better any way.

Above are various white Escobaria's in a row.
The large center plant is a 'White Sand Echin. Trig.' It has been sick for two years. I moved it in the summer to this spot. It has not recovered. I have some others that are huge and fast growing from that area of NM.

Charles, those cactus beds are wonderfully arranged and picturesque.

The cacti look great too.

I wish I could grow the pediocacti, but have never tried as I think they would hate our wet summers.

Fantastic garden! Beautiful little hybrid. The Echinocereus triglochidiatus type from Torrance County is very cool!

Finally, it looks like the summer has arrived to Slovakia.
So, I have decided to plant some Pediocactus knowltonii & simpsonii to my rock garden, just to see what will happen over the next winter.
Currently, some Escobaria & Echinocereus already placed in my cacti garden are doing just fine.
Any advise whether to cover these Pediocacti over the winter will be greatly appreciated.
