J -Cacti 2011

Post by Jens »

Hello since I (and John C) were persuaded to be the moderators for the monthly cactus picture contest (wich is much fun to do indeed), I personally felt that I was missing a place to post some pictures of flowering cacti.
Since I often had much fun looking at this section of the forum- so why not open my own little topic here.-
I hope you will enjoy it too.
This is some of last weeks pictures.
I decided to put them in front of a black cloth (velvet) for a change which is good for the colors to come out more vivid but I found that the aperture had to be dimmed a little (-1,5) to not overexpose the shiny parts of the flower that reflect the bright sunlight.
The down side of it is that the plant body comes out a little darker than with a white background.

Awesome.

The results are inspiring. I really need to put something like that together for pictures.

I think so too Ralf.
Maybe the deeper lying plant structures of the plant in front of the black background would improve if an other reflector (which is pointed at the plant body ) or a ring flash like Christer Johanssen uses for his photos is used. - But I don´t think I would have the patience to put up a very complicated setup for each single photo.... :| .
On the other side if you see the same plant flowering over the years you beginn to think of different (and maybe better ) ways to picture it.

Some more of today - a sunny but windy day.

From the Noto corner of the GH. - The ones I always want to give away - but only untill they flower.
Notocactus_haselbergii (this actually has nice spines too but is said to be a little tender in winter)
