San Pedro Video

Post by doctor289 »

Video I made a few months ago of San Pedro blooming.

Composed of 29 photos taken over about three hours.

The camera (a Nikon D90) was on a tripod but no software so involved me getting up every 5-10 minutes to take a picture.

Next step is to buy another camera and set it up with my old laptop and the Nikon software to make proper high quality and very long timeline, timelapse movies.

Cacti are very fast at budding and flowering but bromeliads can take months.

Cool! It's fun and fairly easy to make a time-lapse like this.

I found that taking pictures at regular intervals (such as every 5 minutes or something like that) does not turn out any better than taking pictures at irregular times. In fact, you can get by with less images up to a point and then you need a lot as it really opens up and then you can slow down again.

Does that seem consistent with your experience?

This is only my second attempt.

As you say you can lower the frequency of photos once the flower is almost fully open.

Software, remote control and a dedicated camera and computer are the way to go but is a significant investment.

I have my previous laptop doing nothing so that eases the pain a bit. Even a cactus-head like me would think twice before buying a laptop just to help take pictures of them.

I didn't know there was software for doing that. Does it just act like a timer?
