How can I tell the difference between a young agave americana variegated and an agave desmettiana variegated? i was given the plant and am not sure which it is.

I think the americana will have much thicker and more rigid leaves than the desmettiana,

You can peruse pics online, or try to post a pic here and ask. The two species are easily discernible.
Agave
"American aloe plant," 1797, from Greek Agaue, proper name in mythology (mother of Pentheus), from agauos "noble," perhaps from agasthai "wonder at".
