Less common and harder to find is Mammillaria wrightii:
M. wrightii, even after rains, hides in grass:
My favorite local cactus is Pediocactus papyracanthus, which you might not see in this picture:

Santa Fe NM cacti in habitat part 3
Hi Mark-
The pics in parts 3 and 4 are from 3 different "urban" locations within Santa Fe city limits. (Cars whizzing by, new construction going on, well worn trails, etc) Basically I look for relatively undisturbed pinon-juniper woodlands with grama grass and not too many Opuntias. If there are a ton of Opuntias, especially O. polyacantha, it usually means the land was over grazed and is degraded.
PM me if you ever get up this way. I have about 5 regular spots in which just about everything that grows here can be found at the right time of year.
