Basic spine damage question

Post by JWells »

First year grower here. Today I was at Home Depot and spotted a beautiful Echinocereus rigidissimus v. rubrispinus and made the purchase. When I got home I removed the straw flower w/ a pair of tweezers and pulled off a few of the gorgeous red spines. I can't find it in any of the past posts or (straw flower) articles, but will the spines grow back? It's such a beautiful cactus and the spines on it are so awesome, I'd hate to know they won't come back. Either way, after this year I think I'll be ordering online vs. the box store (w/ straw flowers) purchase. Thanks for any help.

Spines don't grow back, unfortunately, however over a long enough time scale, the lack of spines on one part of the plant should become overshadowed by the nicer parts of the plant, i.e. the new growth! :)
