Sounds good Dustin! Can't wait to hear what you are going to get. I think Selenicereus is my favorite Epi genus. _________________ All Cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are Cacti |

lol Tony, I'll be back out there one of these days. Hopefuly to move, but I'd like to be a lil further from the city, like where all those wind mills are off of I-10. About the Epi's tho, as I currently do not have any, it is a unknown if I will get addicted to them. What am I saying after these 2 cuttings I orderd I'll probably turn my yard into a hanging jungle. lol _________________ http://cactusmain.blogspot.com/ |

Has anyone ever dealt with Planta Seca nursery in Alamo, CA? I ran across a few of their plants on eBay and they mention their website (www.plantaseca.com). They seem to have some VERY nice plants, but they seem to be universally expensive.
He seems to have some interesting stuff. Take a look at the nursery picture link from the front page. |
Just went last fall and got quite a few cacti from him, including some expensive larger specimens that I just couldn't envision running across elsewhere. Met him at the fall San Jose show. It's a nice small but well stocked nursery by appt. only.
His 3" plants at shows are pricey- $15 for a graft Mamm leuthyi, but I suppose I could have kept looking for a year to save a couple of bucks. His plants are fattened up but healthy.
On the left his Copiapoa cinerea 3 years old compared to Mesa Garden's 10 year old hard grown version on the right.

Nearly all of mine, I have found on eBay. Being Canadian, I am taking my chances from buying from US sellers but so far, most of them are here safe and sound and in beautiful shape. They have even written cactus on the box and customs has let them go through. They are all shipped bare rooted. One person wrote garden ornaments. I had 6 little beauties shipped from England. Bought on eBay. I am expecting a few more this week. The fun thing about eBay is I can find different types than the typical ones sold in the nurseries here.
On a side note, I have ordered too many for my windows and now I am trying to think of brilliant ideas for them. I loved the picture someone posted (sorry forgot who) of their many cacti in a terra cotta planter, all left in the little pots. I am going to do some smaller versions of that. That will make it look like less planters and will allow me to keep them all.
Note to self. STAY OFF EBAY! |

OK, I posted a link in the "General" section on this, but I think it should go here too. I know that not many are into the Epi hybrids on this forum, but Matt has such nice plants and good service, it would be wrong for me not to post.
Aside from that, he has some Epi species available that are quite hard to find.
So for those interested:
http://www.mattslandscape.com |
I have to second this opinion. I helped Matt with a web site problem, and in return got some wonderful epi cuttings just "thrown in"... what a great way to start a collection! I also ordered some Echinopsis, that are nice and healthy plants.
Sometimes Matt gets backed up on orders, but he makes up for that in extras and service. So, if you are looking for plants with dramatic blooms, this is a good place to start.
By the way, apparently he does not have a picture of every one of his available epis on his site, so, I'm guessing that if you want a specific hybrid and don't see a picture of it, you may just have to ask! |

I'm just wondering if there are any nurseries or vendors in Canada that have a fairly wide selection of cacti/seeds in stock? The local stores, they only carry the same old stock and a limited selection of species.
Besides ebay, there are very limited Canada based vendors. I would most likely try to avoid international sellers if possible, just to prevent risk of seizures or anything due to CITES or whatever.
Or perhaps there are vendors that other Canadians have ordered from recently, that they know or feel secure?
Thanks for any info possible! |

Ordered some seeds today from an interesting place, not specializing in cacti or succulents. I thought I would give it a shot and let everyone know how it goes. Minimum order of $15 so I bought 100 Astrophytum hybrid seeds, 100 Echinopsis mixture seeds, 100 Rebutia rubriflora seeds, and 100 Trichocereus pachanoi seeds. I will let you know when they come in, what I think, and how well the seeds germinate! _________________ Anthony |

I just bumped into this website from New Zealand:

Maybe everybody living there already knows of it, but it looks like a neat place anyway. _________________ All Cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are Cacti |

burnaby grenhouses or some such nae is a HUGE supplier of cacti, mayeb check them out, but not sure if they bother with private sales... i suspect not.
my experience with importing to canada (i lived across the pond from you) is they didnt seem to care much about CITES for plants (they sure did with animals though!), but you are going to want a phytosanitary certificate...and obviously bare root plants. _________________ Stephen Robert Irwin: 22 February 1962 – 4 September 2006. I got some plants from this guy recently and they were all nice plants. Sent a number of "freebies" along too!
http://www.cactusspecialties.com/
When you look at the plant list pay attention, the sowing date is on most items. Some are very young and you get a very small seedling. Be forewarned, he doesn't have any of the Geohintonia he has listed.
Other than that, everything went smoothly! _________________ Tim

Tim,
I was absolutely blown away at Sheilam. There is no nursery any better any where. I suppose that you didn't actually order cacti from there, but they have them, in huge quantites.

I just found this thread, and I have to know, what is that plany you're standing next to? The best nursery I've found around here so far, is an organic one, 50 miles away, called Texas Native Plants. I'm actually considering starting my own |
