Looks like E. grusonii, but is not. What is it?
Hey All,
I have been trying to remember the name of a cactus that Looks like E. grusonii, but is not. I know there is one as I have confused them in the past. Can someone please tell me the name? I hope someone knows what I'm talking about.
Thanks

I have no idea. Basically E. grusonii looks like E. grusonii. They are one of the easiest cacti to identify.
Here's to you, all you insidious creatures of green..er I mean cacti.
Re: Looks like E. grusonii, but is not. What is it?
where has the picture gone?
if it looks like a Grusonii maybe its a Denmoza rhodacantha some of them do look heaps like E. grusonii

Buying a cactus a day will keep the madness away.

Yeah... No picture... I'm hoping to find a picture if someone can give me a name
Maybe the plant I'm thinking of is Denmoza rhodacantha diamantina.... but I'm not sure.

I find that a young E. grusonii looks significantly different from a mature E. grusonii. Which are you referring to? I could see someone mistaking a few of the ferocactus species for one.
Or what about Echinocactus platycanthus?

^^^ F. glaucescends does look sorta like E. grusonii minus the color of the flesh of course.
I am sorta confused by this posting. Except to say that young ones do not look like mature ones. lol

Hey Spikeion, Yeah, I have several seedlings I've grown. They're about golfball size, and I collected them off adult plants, so I've seen how they change.
But the plant I'm trying to find the name of looks very similar to E. grusonii but without the very defined ribs of E. grusonii, unless it develops them as it gets older.
And not F. glaucescens as the spines and skin are wrong.
But I'll keep looking. Thanks All!

Re: Looks like E. grusonii, but is not. What is it?
Nope... again, spines too thin.
Oh and after looking at page after page of pics of F. glaucescens on an image search, it was definitely Not that. Ribs were wrong too.
Ferocactus chrysacanthus looks close, but still not what I recall seeing. I think one of the differences between the two is the growing point. E. grusonii was more dense.
The spines curl down on E. grusonii but not on the plant in question.
I have been looking at images of Barrel Cactus, Ferocactus, Echinocactus just to see what comes up. But I was just more amazed how many were either mislabeled or unlabled/unidentified.
For instance, here's one labeled as a Ferocactus

And then there's this one - http://www.camerasnaps.org.uk/cacti/12- ... cactus.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I'll just keep looking

I'm betting the E. trusonii is better suited for your front yard than the E. grusonii you keep trying to get!
Once bitten by the cactus collecting/growing bug, there is no known cure!
There's no 12 step programme for Cactaholics...so I shall just have to get some more!!
