From what others have said, O. humifusa = indestructible, so I'd say yes. In the wild pads would probably have to root in full sun with little to no moisture for long periods.

Happy growing!

There is always one more glochid. Somewhere.

I just don't want them to rot in the rain.

If you have them in a soil that drains as it should for a cactus bed then you can rest easy. If they are in a heavy muddy soil, then you probably still will succeed, but there is a chance of failure. Even then, you're likely to see any problems long before it is fatal.

Just make sure your soil is fairly loose, a bit sandy (opposed to heavy clay) and that it drains after a rain. Throw a pad or 2 or 4 or ? on the ground and forget them. They root all over for me and I don't even try. It's the one thing that grows worry-free up in the northern wilds!
Catch a falling star--but don't try it with a cactus!
