When to Take Offsets?

I have a new agave (a.colorata) in a plastic container and it already has several offsets. Can/should I separate them now before planting (it's easier) or should I wait until they have matured a bit more after planting?

Also, I have an a. paryyi in the ground with two offsets. How long before they appear is the best time to separate them from the "mother" plant. Is there anything in the separation process that will maximize the chances of a successful new plant.
