Cactus in pots on a patio has a rock garden look. Pots can be moved in case of a freeze. Rare cactus in a bench that is covered in plastic in case of a cold winter rain.

Very beautiful project! I love gazanias. Check out the variety i attached. It flowers like crazy and never stops as long as u deahead them.
May i suggest throwing in a bougainvillea. They really go a long way. U can also cover the wall with star jasmine (or the less vigorous stephanotis floribunda). It is evergreen meaning the wall is always covered. And the flowers smell just heavenly! U can smell them from hundreds of feet.
Nevertheless, im following your progress for ideas for my own house.
Oh and maybe an aloe perfoliata.

I have gazanias in the front were they get sun in the winter back here they get winter shade and bad aphid infestation probably because of the shade so I pulled them. Jasmine is nice I used to have it in another place. I'm putting in more rocks slowly as I get them and will have to trim the dusty miller way back. I don't water much just the 2 bird of paradise plants. I really like the Lillys I planted really nice flowers and almost no water required.

Wow I looked at my old photos a few posts up and everything is bigger now.

Might I suggest some low-growing sedums as filler between the other plants, give it a more finished look? Use species that are short enough they won't choke anything out.

Oregon Sedum would work well - it's a widely-adapted native, and seed is available fairly cheap - http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/37072/

It develops a nice red color in the sun - http://www.anniesannuals.com/plants/view/?id=3373

Matilija poppy This plant goes dormant in the Summer , all the leaves fall off, looks dead but Winter rains get it going again.

It needs smoke to help germinate the seeds because its a fire adapted plant It will grow up after the fire has burned away the sage brush .

This type of Echeverria does well I have another looks very similar but doesn't grow compact like this and has larger flower stalks with darker flowers I think its a hybrid of some kind but not good for outdoor planting .

Dudleya pulverulenta these grow on the hills around where I live often on shear cliffs where little else can grow. This one gets full shade in Winter because of the block wall but grows fine anyway. Half day sun now in Mid Summer.
