Baja Forever part 1
Baja Forever part 1
Here's a version of the coastal desert between San Quintin and El Rosario, El Valle Tranquillo. This is also where Echinocereus maritimus grows in grassy dunes very near the beach (sadly, no good picture).
The two main characters in this coastal desert area are Stenocereus gummosus and Agaves (not sure the species). The Agave really dominate the landscape. Bergerocactus emoryi, several unidentified opuntias and many small, hook spined mammillarias abound also (mam. dioica certainly, but I think I found some others as well).
Wicked cholla! ID?
more to come...

Peter,
As I'm going through my own pictures trying to ID the cacti, I have been thinking about yours too.
You mention the Mammillarias. I think I saw a thousand Mammillarias, but I think every one of them was M. dioica and growing from East to West, North to South.
That cholla above. I'm starting to lean towards C. prolifera for those.

All Cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are Cacti
