Post by peterb »

Hello- Here's O. invicta and an unidentified short spined echinocereus that I meant to post:

PS- the Baja photobucket album also has pictures from Organ Pipe in AZ.

What do you think about Echinocereus grandis for an ID?

Hi Daiv- thanks for taking a guess at the echinocereus. I think e. grandis has much more dense spines and is an island endemic, but I'm not sure. Really don't know very much about Baja Echinocerei...

Hmm. I thought about the spine density, but thought this one might a little stretched out from the shade.

Ok Peter, I've put in for time off in March from the 15th to the 19th for a trip to Baja! 5 days and 4 nights.

Here is my overall plan...

Head down to Bahia De Los Angeles for the first night. Then go over near Bahia Tortugas for the second night. Explore around the Vizcaino Penninsula and spend another night there. Then head over to Santa Rosalia for night 4.

I especially want to explore around between San Ignacio and Santa Rosalia per a CSSA journal about the variety of cacti species in that area.

Hi daiv- Cerro Colorado! check out this link:

http://www.desertmuseum.org/programs/succulents.html

I kicked myself for discovering the link after we got back. Next time!

On the way down, definitely stop after San Quintin but before El Rosario somewhere along the Pacific and poke around.

Around Bahia de Los Angeles I highly recommend a side trip out toward Mision San Borja.

In Bahia de Los Angeles will you be camping? Campo Archelon is nice, if so. Palapas right on the water for $10 a night. Dagget's was too crowded for me! I also heard that there's a not-so-friendly guy on a motorcycle trying to collect a camping fee for campers out on La Gringa, which is free, federal land.

anyway, I envy you! Can't wait to get back there.

Thanks for the pointers. I am pretty sure that the link you posted is by the same folk who did the CSSA article.

We've got a "Class B" van/motorhome 4X4 that we'll be in, so we are self contained. All we need is a level spot to park. Everything else is in the van.
