What is your favorite cactus species?

Post by kari »

Hi, thought I'd start some interaction here.

I have several favorite cacti, and when I have time I'll include them here!

But what I'd like to know is:

What is your favorite:
Cactus (general)
Prickly Pear
Cholla
Mammilaria-type (species in the genus or related genera, etc.)
Echinocereus-type (ditto)
Echinocactus-type (double ditto)
Cereus-type (you know)
USA-overall
Mexico
South America, etc.

Answer all or just one or whichever, and Have Fun!

So far my collection consist of several types of prickly pear and several different cholla.
Next I'd like to get ahold of some Grizzly Bear Prickly Pear 8)

Thus far all my cacti are made in the USA :lol:

OK, I have a little time here, so here's my best shot:

Cactus (general)
Astrophytum asterias. Maybe a plant or two left down in far south Texas;

Prickly Pear
Opuntia violacea macrocentra, purple prickly
pear with long black spines, cool;

Cholla
Cylindropuntia bigelovii, the teddy bear cholla;

Mammilaria-type (species in the genus or related genera, etc.)
Mammilaria heyderi: not really an impressive
species, but the fruits are quite yummy and they're neat to find;

Echinocereus-type (ditto)
E. fendleri and varieties;

Echinocactus-type (double ditto)
E. texensis, because it has a cool common name,
Horse Crippler!

Cereus-type (you know)
Carnegiea giganteus, saguaro, duh, it's my native state flower;

USA-overall (not previously listed)
Epithelantha bokei, the button cactus.

Mexico
Golden barrel

South America, etc.
Notocactus leninghausii, because you can pet
one.

There are many others I like, like the little Pediocactus species (like P. papyracanthus), but I tried to narrow the selections down.

Kari,
Neat idea. This forum needed some of that Texas Spunk! 8)

My favorite cactus is probably Stenocereus eruca the Creeping Devil. I'll never forget the first time visiting the Huntington and rounding the corner on the dramatic patch they have there. You can see it on the site here:

http://www.cactiguide.com/cactus/?genus ... cies=eruca

I am also keen on Pereskia because of their atypical look (for a cactus that is).

I'm a sucker for any tree cacti as well. From the wildly popular Carnegia gigantea (Saguaro) to the Espostoa's and other South American tree-like genera. This is probably because second only to cacti is my appreciation for all kinds of trees. I collect leaves, cones, and other pieces as well as photograph as many trees as I can, but no website on that subject. (yet :shock: ) Orchids are a third.

Oh no Magnus, I must have done that yesterday. I apologize for that. I was editing my post and I think I knocked yours out by accident. :oops: Can you re-post it?

I, too, collect cones! Ifn you have any I can have from your neck o' the woods, let me know!

Currently I am working on getting some Mammillaria/Coryphantha/Escobaria vivipara vivipara to send to some guy in some Scandinavian country way up yonder where it's like dark all the time. :roll:

Yeah, Magnus, I have a place where I can some fresh.

About trimming the roots, like, just the small thin ones? How d'y'all like my drawl!?

OK, bye.

Favourite Cacti

Post by templegatejohn »

Hi there, may as well get in on the act.

Most of my favourites are in the white spined varieties. i.e. Mammillaria Pectinifera, Leuthyi, Theresae, Opuntia Microdasys var. Angel's Wings etc. and most of the Stenocactus which fascinate me.

Some of the more unusual Astrophytum's ie. Super Kabuto and Myriostigma Nudum and Onzuka are also very appealing to me

What the hell, I like them all.
