Re: A beginner's English windowsill collection

I love sempervivums. We have tectorum natives here. Mine has spent around 17 years with me and still going stromg with no sign of flowering (thank the succulent gods. I recently got some other varieties very close to yours to keep it company. I like them, but the main reason I have them is because ...

Re: Acetamiprid (insecticide) in the UK

I took a picture. The blurb for Bug Clear Ultra 2 says: "An insecticide for ornamental plants that is effective against a range of common insects including: aphids, whitefly, scale insects, spider mites, caterpillars, lily beetles, leaf beetles and mealy bugs (useful control). Contains rapesee...

Re: A beginner's English windowsill collection

Last year I bought a multipack of unlabelled Semperviviums with two cultivars of tectorum and one cultivar of arachnoideum. The latter I split into lots of separate heads/crowns, some of which are trying to flower this year: https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1754/42513139281_4248813d8f_c.jpg https://fa...

Acetamiprid (insecticide) in the UK

I visited B&Q in the UK recently and noticed that Scott's Bug Clear Ultra, with the active ingredient Acetamiprid, is being replaced on the shelves by Bug Clear Ultra 2 which has a different main active ingredient (although it still has neonics, if I remember correctly). Similarly their other Ac...

Re: Are these failed Neochilenia seedlings?

They might have gone "blind" - the growth point may have been damaged. They could also have gone dormant for some reason, or the root may have rotted off.

I would wait longer, keep them damp and warm and see what they do.

Re: A beginner's English windowsill collection

Here's Gymnocalycium horstii this year showing a little healthy new growth: https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1742/41667144964_3d6ced351f_c.jpg And also Sulcorebutia rauschii violacidermis recovering after a fairly severe mite attack. It etiolated at first, as the skin was so badly damaged it obviously...

Re: A beginner's English windowsill collection

Yeah, those seedlings are giant considering when they were sown. Perhaps such species, I am no expert. How is your sick G. Horstii? Is it looking better now after re potted? The G.horstii is doing fine, as far as I can tell. The stem/body is growing slowly, hopefully it's putting on plenty of roots...

After a couple of months, the cactus is shriveled but with lots of healthy looking offsets forming: https://farm1.staticflickr.com/973/42084191142_64de6684ee_c.jpg I also went back last week and found B&Q had a couple more, so bought this following one to live outside. Unfortunately it has some ...

Re: A beginner's English windowsill collection

I bought the following Astrophytum capricorne from a cactus nursery last year as I liked the colour of its flowers, not realising it was so sickly until I got it home (I must have been blind!!!) The roots were bound up in a little root-ball shaped like a pot it must have been in years ago, and the a...

Number 9 has grown quite a bit. I can't make my mind up whether it is etiolating or is some form of Chamaecereus.

Re: Help With an ID

Until I saw the flower I was sure this was a Thelocactus bicolour of some kind, but the flower is not only the wrong colour but also the wrong shape/size.

Maybe Parodia aureicentra?

Re: Tasty fruiting cacti for a public garden

It may also be worth looking into the cacti that have edible stems, such as the Opuntias and Ferocacti (including Glandulicactus uncinatus) I always thought it to be heartbreaking to actually cut up a big ferocactus and eat the core So do I, but people do it. I'm not sure if the OP is aiming to act...
