Re: Questions about Echinopsis blooms
Thanks for all the replies, everyone! These pics were taken at about 3:00am the night that it bloomed, so I guess it just didn't open all the way. The flower is closed now and has flopped over on the stem. I don't think it was pollinated, but I'll wait a few days just to be sure. I learn something n...

Questions about Echinopsis blooms
Well, it appears I spoke to soon in my last post, when I said I was disappointed about my E. subdenudata didn't bloom this year... It did end up putting out one bloom, which opened early this morning. I'm a bit bummed so far, as it hasn't fully opened, and it's not as showy and ornate as a lot of th...

Re: Echinopsis hybrids
Wow, these are gorgeous! Thanks for sharing, Jim! I have a mystery hybrid from HD that was only marked "Echinobivia." I was really hoping it would flower this spring, but no luck so far. My plants had a dark, cold dormancy last winter. Do you know what your average winter temps are in the ...

My Dark Winter Success Story
So I've posted before about my dark winter experiment, and I wanted to give you all a final update. Brief recap: I have a centrally heated apartment, so I can't keep one area cooler than the rest. I wanted my collection to go dormant, so I had to get creative. I used a hole in the wall.... the spot ...

Re: Mammillaria ID: blobby weirdo
Thanks, Cactidan! This plant was in soil that was soaking wet when I bought it, I let it sit bare root for a week and haven't watered it since I repotted. I'm going to hold off for another few weeks on watering.

Mammillaria ID: blobby weirdo
I found this plant languishing in a soaking wet pot at Home Depot, and long story short, some bad plant caretakers got my $8.00 and I ended up with, well...this amazingly blobby weirdo. It's out of that soaking wet soil and in a proper mix and terracotta pot, but the flowers were done before I bough...

Re: Is overwintering in total darkness possible?
Quick update on my dark winter attempt: It went pretty well, overall. I took them out at the end of February and spent March reacclimating them to full light. They're under the grow lights full time now, in an east facing window. No sunburn or damage so far! I had some minor etiolation on some Echin...

Re: Dormant...but pupping?
Good point about the spine color, I hadn't considered that.greenknight wrote: ↑Tue Feb 27, 2018 5:01 am Judging by the good spine color on that pup, I'd say it didn't grow in the dark - you must have just overlooked it earlier. It is a very nice species, I agree.

Re: Is overwintering in total darkness possible?
@PresidentKang, I somehow missed your answer, thank you very much! It seems amazing to me, but all the cacti that were kept in total darkness, but one that lost its roots and that I remember was unstable the minute it was bought), seem perfectly fine with it! No signs of etiolation, no instability ...

Re: Dormant...but pupping?
Yes just detach them off leaving part of the root on the pup. They often become detached normally and form a separate plant as they get larger anyway. It is often hard to tell therefore if they were originally seedlings from seed falling off the plants, or originally derived from stolens. Don't kno...

Re: Dormant...but pupping?
As long as the plant is not etiolating, and it does not seem to be, don't worry about those offsets growing. They are growing using the plants own resources, therefore watering or not would make no difference. You often get some species flower at the start of the year before they get any water at a...

Re: Dormant...but pupping?
Thank you, that's what I thought they might be. I guess my next project is learning how to grow from seed! It's possible I missed the new offset before I stored the plants, either way I'm stoked. Clumping cacti are my favorite!

Dormant...but pupping?
Hi All, So I experimented with a cold, dark dormancy this winter. With daytime outside temps above 45 for the next two weeks, I decided to begin transitioning my plants out of dormancy. I took them out today, and have them on a shelf with bright but indirect light so I can begin re-acclimating them ...

Re: Is overwintering in total darkness possible?
I am currently trying a fully dark, cold overwinter. I had no other feasible option in a small, centrally heated apartment. I'm in the northern US, so we get long, cold, dark winters. I'm basically following Daiv's advice and so far I haven't had any problems. The last water was in early October, an...

Re: ID Help? (And bonus cultivation question)
Yes daiv did do cold dormancy. The most important thing is air circulation to some extent if the area can be humid. Be careful in spring not to put them immediately in the sun. You have to gradually acclimate them Thanks! I have a plan for re-acclimating them to the sun, and the spot actually gets ...
