Re: Handy Gizmos
I know this will sound silly, but I use a large turkey baster with volume markings on the side - I have mostly 5" and smaller pots with odd ones larger - it allows me to be precise in placing the water where I want it and I can be pretty close with volume delivery - I mix my water/ferts in a 1 ...

Re: Looking for Malagasy Euphorbia article
Very nice collection Jerry. I enjoy my euphorbs as well although they are difficult to find/purchase in Canada - keeping aeruginosa, horrida, inermis, meloformis variegata, obesa, pseudoglobosa, resinifera, stellata, susannae

Re: Over-wintering fluorescent setup and questions/help
Hey Jerry, I have been happy with my lights and the setup - it isn't what you'd call an expert set-up but it keeps my little hobby desires fulfilled. I set up a 2nd setup, the same 4 x 2 for 8 square feet and for this second setup I purchased a Mars TSL-2000. With the original fluorescent setup at a...

Re: added calcium?
Thanks Jerry, I'm clear on the liquid and the "stock solution" - the dry ratio didn't make sense but I appreciate that you did the calculations (saw your other posts) for the gallon mixture. I'll just go that route, I was just a little concerned about mixing up a gallon of the "stock ...

Re: added calcium?
Looking for some help from you guys so I can simplify adding K2SO4 to my DynaGro 7-8-6 with the addition of the dry product rather than making a "stock solution". I am a little confused and maybe not catching on. Above, Steve suggested 1/8 tsp of the powdered/dry K2SO4 to 1 gallon of the D...

Re: Is water softening with Na ions OK for succs?
A 19L bottle will last me about 2 weeks - 19L diluted 10% - 15% gives me about 22L water - plants, coffee, kettle. $7/bottle so about $15/month which is acceptable for me. As for the fire eel, I have kept other eels from South America which like soft water and they had adapted well to my hard water ...

Re: Is water softening with Na ions OK for succs?
Agree with Jerry regarding size of collection and buying water - I have a softener system in my home, despite it I buy large bottles (19L) of RO water to use in my espresso $$$ machine, kettle, drip coffee maker and my smallish 40-50 plant collection. Even with the softener, I would get mineral/salt...

Re: LED growing (artificial) light
I'm no expert, however, I use a few different lights and can share some info. At 50 watts, I don't believe you're going to get much output - your shelf looks like 12" x 30" or so. I have a T5HO, 6 x 4 foot tubes (actually 42" ), The T5HO are fluo's (Hydrofarm 6400K) and put out decent...

Re: Thoughts on pest / mamm longimamma
Have tried and can't see any red spider mites (although it would be my first experience with them), however, as I looked closer I did see a very tiny white insect moving in the center of the plant - first I have seen?? Very tiny, it was under a bright light and some shadowing that I was able to see ...

Thoughts on pest / mamm longimamma
My mamm longimamma has developed a white film?? in the last couple of weeks - some of the areas have little scars that look something was dragged across the surface - am I dealing with scale? Have had the plant for several years, same spot, 5-6 hours afternoon sun, no growth problems or challenges t...

Re: grow lights for winter indoor period
I also use T5 over the winter for certain plants. I use an Agrobrite fixture with 6 bulbs - 4 foot they are called but are actually 45" in length. I hang the fixture at 29" above the plants in a 2 x 4 foot setup, which has a white floor and white reflective walls (white hardboard) that are...

Re: Ferocactus latispinus issue
Thanks for the comments. Harald, the rest of the plant looks not bad, in my 2nd pic you can see another rib to the left of the worst part also affected. I looked closer and there are some faint hints of discoloration elsewhere, ever so slight. If Harald and anttisep are correct about the cold theory...

Any thoughts anyone?
Or do i just put it in quarantine and see what its fate will be with time?

Ferocactus latispinus issue
I was hoping someone could give me some thoughts as to what may be afflicting my ferocactus - the stem has got a mustard colored scaling to it in several spots. Was a healthy specimen last year - last watering was mid-October before I wintered it in a north facing window with 5-6 other cacti I have ...
