Re: Growing cacti- a mans world?
I find the opposite true. Outside of specialized message boards and forums like this I find the majority are women or perhaps nearly split between men and women. Instagram, Tiktok, and Youtube are loaded with passionate female growers. And if you take to succulents I find it's even more pronounced.

Re: This orange tissue is making my grafts fail. Help!
My gut feeling is your problem is airborne or in the soil. I've been grafting on Pereskiopsis for about a decade now and I would see that orange colour on failed grafts only when I had the humidity too high with something like a dome covering the plants and too much stale air. There have been a numb...

Re: Pereskiopsis Growing Guide
Shane Have you seen this site? http://pereskiopsis.com/growing-cacti-from-cuttings/ I did I think a long time ago. I'd forgotten about it. I think it's by a forum member actually. There's a section specifically about growing Pereskiopsis http://pereskiopsis.com/pereskiopsis/ It actually has a good ...

Re: Cactus prices higher than ever
I'm glad I saw this thread because I've been talking about this here in Canada since about late 2017. I'll see if I can find the threads and PMs exchanged on the topic. At that point we entered a succulent fad that was bleeding into cacti as being very chic and I was reselling many of my oddball gra...

What are the pros and cons of starting Astrophytum seed outdoors?
I live in the far north and have for years always started my seed indoors with grow lights. This year, I got my seed much earlier than I would have normally and would like to entertain the idea of taking advantage of the free sunshine outside to get a leg up before they go back in the basement under...

Re: My plant tables
Wanted to share a few pictures of tables I just built. I moved recently (to the Pico Robertson area for anyone who knows LA) and decided to finally build some tables for my cacti. I got one parking space for my plants and thought keeping them off the hot concrete would be good, plus the tables will...

Re: Where do people disappear too?
I think for most people “life happens” priorities shift, a new baby, or career, responsibilities, moving, etc. I’ve spent time on both this forum and the bcss, and there’s a wealth of knowledge in both spaces. I think most of the migration for interested minds has been towards “fast” platforms like...

Re: crested copiapoa seedling ?
It may or may not revert to normal growth. I've had a few of these that I thought were crested and after grafting they normalized. I cut and rooted the normalized portion and it was hardly noticeable.

I was looking at buying some Cytokinin to try some tissue culture. I'll be paying attention to your thread. Thanks for sharing.

Re: why do online seller list sold out cactus
There is a legitimate strategy for keeping the text for sold out cacti active and that is SEO (search engine optimization). Google's algorithm for search results is private but since nearly the beginning it has relied on the text used on a website for the context of what to show to the user. Quite a...

Thanks Aiko! I've just checked the list a Matucana Madisoniorum is still available but i've never purchased seeds via seed list. Do I just email them telling them which seeds I want? Also do you happen to know how much shipping to the UK is and if the seeds are fresh/ good quality? Just going to se...

Re: Can you graft any non cactus succulents to a cactus?
I remember a member here successfully grafting a Portulaca grandiflora to a Pereskiopsis. Remember that our concepts of plant classification and taxonomy are humanity's own attempts to make order out of plants. There are likely a handful of plants whether succulent or not that have compatibility to ...

Re: some experimental grafts
Monstrose growth is due to Phytoplasma infection (witch's broom). Are the two one and the same? I've described various Trichocereus as having witch's broom to growers who claimed that they had rare monstrose growth that was really valuable. To be honest, though, I thought that they were two differe...

Re: What are these spots on my Trichocereus Peruvianus?
That is a very interesting kind of discoloration. I do work with plant pathogens (mostly fungi) and I cannot tell the cause of the discolored areas on your plant. There seems to be a clear boundary between the "healthy green tissue" and the discolored one. I assume, that the latter is sli...

Re: Alternatives to Anderson's "The Cactus Family"
One thing I find nearly absent in most cacti books is growing advice for your own home environment whether indoors or outdoors. Well, we have too many variables here - you can list here all factors involved in cactus cultivation. Except for dummy advice on some websites or popular books, no serious...
