Re: Opuntia Microdasys v.Albispina failure?
Hi Jerry, My apologies for the long delay in posting back. I got the seeds from an eBay seller and I have no idea how old the seeds were when I received them. The original eBay listing is here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/234549341015 My plants are not the same variety as the pictures in the listing....

Re: Opuntia Microdasys v.Albispina failure?
Hi all, If anyone is still following this thread, here's an updated picture of the little guy that I've been taking care of. For a better idea of scale, the cactus is about 12-13mm from the base of the seed leaves to the top. As tiny and fragile as it is, I took the decision to repot it this morning...

Re: Opuntia Microdasys v.Albispina failure?
That's interesting, thanks for the video link. I'll post back with pictures in a few weeks/months when something interesting happens!
I've seen Desert Plants of Avalon's channel before. Very informative and chirpy channel
Opuntia seedlings pictures and videos on the internet seem very rare.

Thanks for the extra info Spence.
So, will the familiar round disc shapes emerge from the middle of those leaves?

Re: Opuntia Microdasys v.Albispina failure?
Success!! Thanks to the people here saying they are difficult to grow from seed, I was patient, and almost two months since sowing them, one has sprung into life π I have to say, it looks nothing like a bunny ears cactus yet - I'm assuming that will change. Some might say those look more like bunny ...

Re: Plant watering alarm/reminder gadget
Yes, 1,000 devices would be an expensive way to drive yourself mad with all that chirping. But, for the odd plant or two which might need a bit of extra care, they are worth considering. For the real geeks out there, you can also program the device via the In-System Programming (ISP) header on the b...

Re: Plant watering alarm/reminder gadget
The problem with most watering devices I have come across is they don't work too well with small pots since the soil is not deep enough. Also, with gritty dry type cactus and succulent soils not in intimate contact with the length of the probe. With sensors permanently in a pot you would need one f...

Re: Plant watering alarm/reminder gadget
Personally, I think the device is fine as it is. Heat-shrinkable tubing could potentially have the opposite of the intended purpose and hold splashed water over the components for a prolonged period of time. Heat-shrinkable tubing would have to be very well applied and completely airtight, with the ...

Re: Opuntia Microdasys v.Albispina failure?
I still have 10 seeds in my fridge in the hope stratifying them might help with germination when I get around to sowing them. When I do, I could try 'chipping' 5 of them to see how success rates compare.

Re: Plant watering alarm/reminder gadget
Paul. Have you thought of weighing your pot to track the weight loss as the pot dries? This will not include weight gain from the growth of your plant. Hi Jerry, I hadn't thought of that and it sounds like a great idea. The simplest ideas are often the best. I would still have to remember to get th...

Re: Opuntia Microdasys v.Albispina failure?
That's amazing. If I hadn't come here and read Opuntia seeds can take a very long time to germinate, I might have thrown them away by now.
Over a year, just sat in soil is a very long time.

Plant watering alarm/reminder gadget
Hello, I'm currently experimenting with an electronic 'watering reminder' gadget which I bought from Amazon. The device I refer to is here (manufacturers website): https://www.az-delivery.de/en/products/plant-watering-alarm-feuchtigkeitssensor It's very well made with a thick ridged PCB and surface-...
