Howdy, I picked this astrophytum graft up in CA and flew it back to NC. It has not enjoyed the transition and it appears as though the rootstock is dying off and I would like to save the astrophytum. I don't have grafting/degrafting experience and am at a bit of a loss as to the best approach here. ...

Good products for killing spider mites: - Green Cleaner - Sierra Natural Sciences SNS 217 - Azamax - Safer Insecticidal soap (requires more applications, very mild though) I've found that the trick with spider mites is to automatically treat multiple times and not to assume you got them the first go...

Yes, you can propagate using these flower stalks. I was actually able to visit Dick Wright's setup this summer and was quite surprised to see him propagating a number of the larger echeveria gibbiflora species by simply rooting the flower stalk in dry soil.
