Re: Maximum greenhouse/hoophouse temperature for cacti
Thanks, Dave. That sets my mind at ease. Since I cut the back doorway on this thing a few days ago to function more like a grow tunnel, the temperatures have been maxing out at about 96f when it is 89-91f outside for this abnormally hot start to Spring. I put the thermometer in a shadier spot. The g...

Maximum greenhouse/hoophouse temperature for cacti
Dear Members, I have a large white Outsunny greenhouse in North Central Florida with both ends rolled and twelve side windows fully open. Worked great for Winter but now I'm seeing temperatures inside reach 99-104f even with all apertures open. New growth looks great on what is mostly 3"-4"...

Re: Scarifying with sulfuric acid, then neutralizing
Also, the trick to dissolving the Ga3 crystals to a soluble state for water is in a teaspoon of hot alcohol before adding to measure of distilled water. Not wanting to nuke alcohol in a microwave, I nuked a coffee cup of water super hot, then put the alcohol in a disposable applesauce container over...

Re: Scarifying with sulfuric acid, then neutralizing
Thanks, Shane. You're most Welcome. Interesting about dehydration and Ga3 penetration. I just did it again last month and again, nearly all 1000 seeds germinated and growing even faster than my last batch (better window light closer to Spring). Harsh it is, and it is frightening to watch at the end ...

Re: Scarifying with sulfuric acid, then neutralizing
I actually did use the recipe for treating 100 seeds each in 18 molar sulfuric acid/rinse/gibberellin soak on Harrisia Fragrans and Simpsonii and this gave me just about 100% germination and robust plants. Not using anything on 100 Harrisia Aboriginum seeds, as recommended, gave me nearly 100% as we...

Re: Two ways to prevent fungus gnats
Thanks esp_imaging! I'll purchase some Gnat Off. I picked up on YouTube last night that Mosquito Dunkers broken up and dissolved in water will get more mileage than the Mosquito Bits. I'll also keep diflubenzuron in my notes and ditch the quartz sand. My healthy looking but stalled-out Pachycladus a...

Two ways to prevent fungus gnats
To prevent fungus gnat damage, I have been using coarse quartz sand on top of seedling pots and Mosquito Bits with Bacillus thuringiensis pressed into the soil mix. Is the quartz sand really necessary on six month old seedlings I've just transplanted, and can I rely on just the Mosquito Bits to spre...

Re: air in Ziploc cactus seedling baggies
Thanks. I'll try breathing into one tomorrow, should be past bacterial hazard at this size of seedling. I knew they put out oxygen after consuming Co2 but I wonder what the volume difference is, as carbon is retained and used in growing.

air in Ziploc cactus seedling baggies
I am relatively new to propagating cacti and am loving the Ziploc bag method of growing seedlings. Though I know one is not supposed to open a sterile germination bag, I notice over the weeks that the air in the bags contracts and always suck the plastic sides inward with a little vacuum pressure. I...

Re: Scarifying with sulfuric acid, then neutralizing
Thanks folks. The more I look into this the less likely I am to mess with sulfuric acid. I chatted with botanists today who have no problem germinating Aboriginum but that was with fresh seeds. Fragrans might simply have a tougher seed coat. Per temperature, the house is steadily 78 degrees but I mi...

Re: Scarifying with sulfuric acid, then neutralizing
Thanks. It was from an article written by Florida conservation employees trying to conserve and restore this species to its original range, also appeared in a research paper I found. They got the best result from 45 seconds apparently. For a non-scientist, the details are vague and abbreviated to me...

Scarifying with sulfuric acid, then neutralizing
Hello fellow growers, I am about to scarify Harrisia seeds (Aboriginum, Fragrans and Simpsonii) with the following method I found online, used by Fl. conservationists on Aboriginum: "Dip seeds in 18 M concentrated sulfuric acid for 45 seconds, then in 1000ppm gibberellic acid for 24 hours befor...
