Re: Echinocereus stramineus of the Bishop's Cap Area near Las Cruces, New Mexico
What luck to have checked in to the forums this evening. Beautiful photos as always. I am appreciative of your methodology of posting the co-inhabitors and general scenery of these areas as an introduction. Especially in this case the Fouquierias, at my latitude they've only just begun to bud, we're...

Hegar, we work for the same Department! Although yours is a much more meaningful position I think than mine.
And I hope that last Echinocereus survives until its natural demise, what an unusual "palette" of colors it has, indeed.

Re: Mould?
I'll do you one better, Elie, my first year raising arid plants I inadvertently *grew* about 3" mushrooms in the same container as a Fouquieria splendens. I swear I've gotten better, and that the Fouquieria in question survived my learning curve. Out of curiosity I just pulled out that ...

Again, for I believe the third time in two days, thank you so much for your efforts and your participation in the "hobby," although that word does not do justice to the subject. So many of us just don't have direct access to the academic articles and materials, so its just an absolute trea...

Re: Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Arizona
What a great experience and photos. And the right time to visit with Echinocereus blooming. Don't you enjoy the Armatocereus-like indentations on the stems of the Stenocereus? As I understand it they're constrictions caused by freezing temperatures, but its a wonderful aesthetic that I assume must b...

Ah, I'd been waiting for this! Beautiful photos, especially liked the introductory habitat and cohabiters. I just can't get over how crazy it is to see "coccineus" flowers in so many shades. It's so distracting I haven't even began looking for any differences in spination yet. And thank yo...

Re: Cold Hardiness
Sort of depends on what risk you're willing to take. All the above advice is excellent. As far as particular to those species in containers I can tell you my saguaros have never had any problem with cold and are a part of the first batch to go out in the spring. They've dealt with 25F without issue....

Re: Opuntia bigelovii structural Views
Thank you so much for creating this thread and posting these photos. I very much hope to see more. I mean, *really* fascinating stuff. I'd been hoping for a follow up from the previous bigelovii thread. Ever since I read it I have been nagged by these non-verifiable memories of seeing those little n...

Re: Mould?
Hey, Elie! I've done a little amateur research on this because I've had what very much appears to be the same thing in one of the soils I use to create my own mixes. Mine is always sulphur colored, and in potted plants appears in the drainage holes of containers during the winter, and then in the ba...

Re: Cacti placement in bathroom?
Apologies for the delay in a response to your question, cactusnumber1. The lightbulbs in your bathroom will almost certainly not provide the proper kind of light that cactus need for long term survival and growth. Although it is difficult to tell from this photo what the species are, the majority of...

Re: Nevada desert today. What cacti?
Awesome pics! I was wondering how you all are able to tell the plant from just the photo. What I mean is, I think there are several mammillaria types that have a similar appearance with the barbed spines. How does one distinguish? Are the fruits the giveaway? Is the location a clue? Some day I hope...

Re: Is there any trick to sow Maihueniopsis?
Hey! I just sat down from pre-treating some Maihueniopsis this evening. I don't have any previous experience but I can tell you what I'm trying at the moment. Seeds are Maihueniopsis glomerata and (formerly Maihueniopsis) Cumulopuntia boliviana. 20 seeds from each species I held with a pair of leath...

Re: Another euphorbia, not mine this time (from a video)
After taking another look after work I can make out a couple features in the photograph better. I can tell you that the spines are stipular as opposed to peduncular, which should narrow your selection down when taking into account the general appearance of the plant. Out of my original suggestions a...

Re: Another euphorbia, not mine this time (from a video)
Haha, yes, these things have really bit you good! I apologize, but I have very little confidence in being able to give you a good ID for that image, just not enough to go off of for me. But for the sake of giving you some feedback on the thread, and because I imagine you're more interested in explor...

Re: Euphorbia id
At least to me it does not look like a young E stenoclada, but it does have some markers of that species. After a little more googling it looks like there is a cultivated variety named 'Briar Patch.' This is a hybrid between E tirucalli and E stenoclada. The only picture available on Daves Garden lo...
