Grafting on Opuntia, also polaskia chichipe

Anyone ever graft on large opuntia pads, and if so do you have a preference in species? I know it might not be as fast, but seems amusing to me so I was going to order 10-20 large pads off ebay or something to graft onto this summer. (I already have a lot of Eve's pin, but curious about actual opunt...

it looks fine to me, what are you looking at that you thinks a problem? Is it squishy or something? otherwise it looks a bit dehydrated but fine.

Re: What's up with Copiapoa Haseltoniana?

I bought one yesterday at a greenhouse that's about baseball sized for $20. They had quite a few smaller ones for $10-15. I live in the midwest, so not crazy cactus land either.

Re: Best Heat pad for germination

Temperature dropping to 55-60 at night isn't bad, and for a some seeds it helps them germinate.

It works, but it's messy as hell so I generally look for other alternatives to killing pests.

Re: My grafts 2019

Most all the pereskiopsis were from seeds I germinated/grew myself since spring, and the rest were small pups i broke off some of my other plants. A lot of the arios/astros/gymnos I don't really know exactly what they are, as I got the seed for astros/gymnos for free from an ebay seller from thaila...

Re: Pereskiopsis growing methods

I feel like you're overthinking this with a plant that grows like a weed in basically any garbage soil you have laying around. I put mine in my soil from last year mixed with manure/compost, or spare soil from repotting plants I bought, and then sit them in 1-2" of water in 10x20 trays. I did a...

Re: My grafts 2019

Wow cool collection, and they all seem super healthy. Is that austrocylindropuntia stock? Do you have more experience with grafting on it? There's a separate thread discussing how good is this species for using as stock. It is austrocylindropuntia, I used it cause I figured it was in pretty close r...

My grafts 2019

Here's my grafts from this year. It's my first year doing grafting. I have roughly 250 successful grafts, most of them are on pereskiopsis because I just didn't have that much bigger stock to work with yet. I have a lot of tricho, acanthocereus, hylocereus, stenocereus and some myrtillo that are all...

Re: A question for members that have a Gymnocalycium baldanianum

if it's soft and somewhat deflated feeling when you squeeze it, that generally means it needs watered. Gymno's like a bit more watering and a bit less heat/sun that a lot of other cacti. When they're good and watered they're firm as any other cacti, when they're wanting water they have some give to ...

Re: Growing Hylocereus (from cuttings)

Soil should be fine. They're most likely putting out better roots and sturdying themselves. Make sure they're secure in the pots and don't move around a lot. I threw mine in mostly garbage soil and rock I had left over from last years plants, mixed with compost/manure. then drown them all summer and...

Re: Parafilm Frustration

You need to cut off a small piece of parafilm, stretch it longways a bit then wrap it tightly around the top of stock 1-2 times right below where you're going to cut and place the scion. This will stick to itself and the stock well, and give you something to stick the piece you put over the graft. Th...

Re: elongated gymno seedlings

I've never seen gymnos like that, and I haven't really seen them elongate much either (though I'm sure it's possible). Any chance this got labeled wrong, or seeds got mixed up by chance, because those don't look anything like gymnos, even as seedlings.

Re: What's up with this Mammillaria hahniana

Cactus prices are so variable, by location, store, online/offline etc. Could find it somewhere for $10-30 probably. All those extra pups make it a bit unique, and when it grows out all weird in the coming years it could be a nice showpiece and worth something to people who like weirdos/clumpers.
