Re: Indoor Greenhouse

NIce set up! I have the same lighting for my man cave cactus shelving which has west facing windows instead on south. How about a heating pad on the bottom? The normal kind you lay on when your back hurts. Then put a timer on the outlet to give them a boost when it's coldest...late at night or earl...

Re: Indoor Greenhouse

Hi everyone. Thank you for the fantastic responses! Everyone was really helpful. So, I put a thermometer inside the greenhouse to see how warm it was in there. I'm getting about 66/68°F during the day. Typically I wouldn't be worried but the cacti themselves are changing color. They're getting light...

Indoor Greenhouse

Hello! It's winter and very cold here right now. Midwest USA, Zone 5a/5b. I moved a couple months ago and it's an open concept layout and all of the ceilings are vaulted. Needless to say, my cacti are cold! I can tell by their color that they really aren't liking it. So I bought an indoor greenhouse...

Re: Cacti Sun Damage

Glad I could ease your mind about that. In a few years that minor damage will be barely noticeable. When it gets hot, 90f +, I move a bunch of my cacti that are out in the sun to a spot that gets morning sun only. I have them in a little wagon so they're easy to move around (I pick it up and carry ...

They're So Big! Now What?

http://imgur.com/a/zZ12WIe Hi! I planted some seeds back in mid March 2020. They've grown beautifully! I am in the Midwest (USA). These have mostly stayed inside with the lid on. I only started to remove the lid periodically within the last month or so. I have had them outside a handful of times in ...

Re: Cacti Sun Damage

Here's an example of old sunburn damage - much, much worse than your cacti have: 20200729_181050crpd.jpg This Echinocereus pentalophus got severely sunburned quite a while ago, when the temperature unexpectedly shot up to 85f in May in a previously cool Spring. They can take lots of sun once they'r...

Cacti Sun Damage

Ugh...I messed up. Wasn't expecting to have this happen because a couple of these aren't super young. But I know typically once Cacti are burned, the parts that are damaged don't recover. I was wondering if anyone could take a look at these guys and tell me what I should do moving forward. Should I ...

Got Tiny Little Guys Growing...Now what?

http://imgur.com/a/GHIKOIT Back around April of this year I planted some Giant Saguaro Cactus seeds in a tiny terrarium. I didn't know anything about Cacti at that time...Like the fact that the Giant Saguaro grows ridiculously slow. That was something NOT included in the instructions... At any rate,...

Re: Parodia rudibuenekeri

Hi! ... Is it possible to plant any of its remains with the hope of maybe regrowing a new one in a few months? Or is it too far gone/diseased to matter. I wasn't sure if you could pull off all the spines and plant them together. I have brand new fresh, healthy soil. ... Thanks! I doubt that this ty...

Re: Parodia rudibuenekeri

I'm sorry for your loss... I actually have one in my collection that just bloomed, though I didn't have a second one to pollinate it with - BUT if it does miraculously produce seed or offsets, I'll keep you in mind. I bought it at a Lowes (big box store) very early spring for a dollar, so, you coul...

Re: Mammillaria plumosa

You mentioned Lowes so I assume you live in the US or Mexico and have at least a couple more months of warm temperatures. If this is the case, I would unpot it and get rid of as much of the substrate/soil/peat as you can. Let the roots dry off for 5 to 7 days, then re-pot in a completely stone-base...

Re: Mammillaria plumosa

The brown areas could be the glue where those fake straw flowers were attached and don't put it in strong light straight away you might risk getting it Sun burnt because there are very little radial spines. Were you able to take a look at my pics? The brown spots are very randomized. I was actually...

Mammillaria plumosa

Hi! I was roaming around the garden center at Lowes today and found this interesting looking cactus which ended up being a Mammillaria plumosa, or a Feather Cactus. It was the only one of its kind and I hadn't seen one like this before (semi-new to cactus land). It had a fake straw flower attached t...

Re: Parodia rudibuenekeri

A picture would greatly help in terms of seeing the extent of the damage, but if the plant is completely shriveled and rotted (no living, healthy material) then I don't see any easy way of bringing it back short of crazy science-y cloning or something. Spines by themselves are 'dead' and are not al...

Parodia rudibuenekeri

Hi! I am fairly new to cacti cultivation and growing. I came upon this forum as my grafted cactus had gotten over watered due to a storm. It was a hydrocelous/Parodia rudibuenekeri graft. The hydrocelous burst, but I was able to save the Parodia. This was several weeks ago. Unfortunately, due to som...
