Re: can i repot cacti any time of the year?
Gymnocalyciums are pretty hardy species compared to some of the others I have been growing. Cacti can be repotted anytime of the year, the question is - Should you? Most cacti tend to become dormant in winter and based on my experience, repotting them in winter does not give me any indication as to ...

Re: Using 6-BAP with Lanolin to induce offsets
Ok, its been a few weeks now and I can see some development at the aeriole area. I have pasted two photos below and you would notice a mass of tissue (yellowish) on the top of the aeriole. I'm guessing this will develop into a few pups at that point - the mass of tissue looks a real jumble at the mo...

Re: Spongy cactus with healthy roots
Another reason cactus gets spongy is due to application of too much Nitrogen. Generally for cactus I use a 2:10:10 raio (NPK) mix.

Re: Spongy cactus with healthy roots
I too had the same issue of spongy cactus but very healthy roots. I think in my case, I kept the cactus too dry for too long and therefore was taking a verrry long time to develop hair roots for absorbing water/nutrients. My solution to this was to use hydroponics and rejuvenate the root system. It ...

Re: Is there anyone selling seed grown copiapoa
Is there any reason you are particularly after seed grown copiapoa? Even copiapoa offsets would eventually grow to flowering age and produce seed.

Re: Using 6-BAP with Lanolin to induce offsets
I came across this article that delves into the details on the mechanism used by cytokinins such as 6-BAP. Here's an excerpt: "The primary activity of Confi gure (the cytokinin) is to interrupt apical dominance and stimulate axillary buds to break. Apical dominance is the phenomenon where the t...

Producing cacti offsets with coring
In two of my earlier posts dealing with 6-BAP and hydroponically saved cactus (links below), I had discussed my method of firstly saving an old shrivelled Gymnocalycium from dying using hydroponics and then attempting to force it to generate offsets using 6-BAP. Using 6-BAP with Lanolin to induce of...

Re: Copiapoa Cinerea Seeds
I was curious if anyone is selling Copiapoa Cinerea seeds? I am mostly looking for Colmna Alba but I am interested in all Cinereas. I want to support people on the site and grow my cinerea collection so I can pollinate my own seed in the years to come. Here's a link - I have purchased from him befo...

Re: Using 6-BAP with Lanolin to induce offsets
Hi Shane, this is the weighing scale I purchased from eBay - its is really good quality and has performed consistantly ever since I bought it about 2 years ago. and Yes, most importantly, it measures in milligrams. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/High-Precision-0-001g-50g-Digital-Pocket-Scales-Jewellery...

Re: Using 6-BAP with Lanolin to induce offsets
Okay guys, the jury is in. Firslty, Shane had enquired as to how we could tell whether or not we were getting genuine 6-BAP. I responded by saying that the results would speak for themselves. Well, I am very happy to say that my Euphorba obesa has generated an offset on one of the 3 aerioles onto wh...

Its a good thing you decided to put them into ziplock bags - that way moisture is conserved especially given how thin these leaves are.

Re: Slight mold with copiapoa seedlings
Personally, I have faced the exact same problem you ar facing - I normally spray the seedlings with a very dilute (1/4 strength) of fungicide and also expose the soil mix to the atmosphere to get rid of some of the excess moisture. One thing I have noticed is this - microwaving the soil gets rid of ...

I have seen YouTube vides of people grafting seedlings - you may want to wait another month or so before grafting this one - let it become slightly bigger.

Sometimes a Google serach is all that's required to answer your question. Have a look at this very specific article on why cacti turn yellow.
