Re: Shriveled up tephrocactus geometricus

Is that soil pure grit ? Looks rather coarse too. If the Tephro is supposed to reroot after you received it, I don't think any fresh roots can take up water at all in that soil, they'd be just hanging there in the air. You might wanna dig it up and see if it has any roots at all before taking measur...

Cacti collection for sale, Belgium

Hi all, This is a post for people around Belgium, as I'm talking to someone who has a cacti / succulent collection for sale in West Flanders, probably from their grandpa. They want to sell the collection as a whole, but are unable to find buyers so far. There's surely a few plants there that I might...

Re: First winter: how to?

As we are both in similar climates would you mind specifying what you mean with „deep winter“ and „early spring“? And do you use grow lights during that time? I have two pots that are really crowded. Like I can’t see the top of the soil anymore. And the individual seedlings are pretty big already. ...

Re: Babies outside of container for first time. info?

They look like they can handle it I think. Pot is probably too large for those seedlings, so you'll have to be careful with water logging in the lower parts of the pot, especially as you've used a very rich soil here. In this case I would water them locally, just around the base of the plants, not w...

Re: ELK 2021

PRO Bally collected two species of Echidnopsis from Gof or Got Choba or Chopa, a volcanic crater in Marsabit. If you put these co-ordinates in Google Maps it should show it. 2.4121832019722538 N, 38.04668782580337 E Echidnopsis mariae , which POWO says is Echidnopsis scutellata subsp. australis . B...

Re: ELK 2021

Do you have any tips on it's cultivation? I'm planning on potting it in an all mineral soil (20% bims, 20% lava, 20% sand and 40% grit). Don't think it has special requirements, except for deep pots because of its taproot. They can also take -5 frost. The last plant is indeed a Kalanchoe rhombopilo...

Re: ELK 2021

I see you purchased a Tylecodon Bochulzianus. It's a very nice plant, but slow growing. Around this time of year mine always gets this strange small green leaves. Yes ! It was on my wishlist for a while ! I just got a small pot for only 5 €. And I also got a clavarioides in there ;) By the way, tha...

Re: First winter: how to?

What I do is give them a winter rest, but a short one, they can handle. So keep watering them lightly until deep in winter, given the temperature isn't too low, a short dry period, and then restart light watering early spring. That's what I do, others could have a different approach ;) Repotting is ...

Re: ELK 2021

By the way, I got 1 plant for free. Someone gave it to me and said they don't know what it was, they got it from some bulk collection. Any first wild guesses ? The roots remind me of Tylecodon singularis, but then brown, instead of green/grey.

Re: ELK 2021

I've been today, saturday, and I kinda enjoyed it more than last time I've been, a bit less crowded, pleasant scrowling around. I bought more plants than I was expected to, but that's probably because last year's edition was cancelled ;) I was so absorbed in looking through the plants that I forgot ...

Re: Need advice on multiheaded Strombo

Nice plant. I'd keep it this way at least for now. Do you need more (grafted) plants in your collection? Small seedlings branch this way after some damage occur at their growth point for some reason. And many cacti growers try hard to induce offsets on their generally non-branching plants as Stromb...

Need advice on multiheaded Strombo

Hi all, I'm trying to decide what to do with this multiheaded Strombo. Any idea how this cactus might develop later on in this state ? I'm not sure... So I consider trying to graft these heads. Am I right to assume the base will just regrow new heads later on ? Or you guys think I should not touch i...

They looks pretty healthy to me. In fact, my Gymno stellatum seedlings have it also. I think it's normal juvenile spines in some species.
