Re: Seeking help from everyone, what kind of bacteria is this and how to deal with it?

I put the substrate in the glass jars, including a top layer of course sand, add some water, and put in the pressure cooker. It comes out sterile as a whole, no need to handle it later. I give my seeds a bleach bath, diluted, for about 10 minutes, rinse with tap water, then sow them in the jars, and...

The idea of the top layer of sand, is that it covers the organic material in the sowing substrate, preventing the mold from growing, so you'd need a somewhat flat surface for it. A good substrate to start with is also important. I use a sifted fine gritty mix with a bit of organic material inside, n...

I'd lower the water a bit anyway, looks very wet, good for seed germination but seedlings don't need it to survive. Mostly it's gonna be the empty seed pods that start the mold and keep it growing. You could use tweezers, and take them out. Also a top layer of sand works well to keep the mold at bay...

Re: C and D's Succulents

I read that they have a high density of pores on the leaves, which take up water in the namid desert along the coast. They have become more stable since I changed tactics, don't want to lose any more. They are only about 3 months old, so I'm babysitting :) I studied the Bihrman report on sowing them...

Re: C and D's Succulents

Very nice !! I got a batch of seedlings growing at the moment. I only water them once a week or even less, cause I had a few that damped off, but I do mist them twice a day, and it's going well :)

Oh, yes, I forgot to consider the concept of weeds popping up due to bad sterilisation. Do you have any close up of the actual seeds you got ? Can't see a thing.

Re: Cacti seedling growth in 3 days?

Certainly no cactus sprouts, probably no succulent sprouts either, but who knows some might still come up, though my gut feeling will have to disappoint you. Better buy from a serious dealer.

Re: copiapoa...NOT!

Looks like a Neoporteria flower, and since it's reddish, it could be Neoporteria carneoflora after googling the name, it doesn't come up for some reason I have 3 N. carneofloras, with flowers identical, but the spines are shorter I think we can be confident it's a Neopotreria / Eriosyce, as I place...

Re: copiapoa...NOT!

Acanthocalycium glaucum Hmm, considering the variations in the species I guess it could match, though a lot of features are different from the regular Acanthocalycium glaucum, with the blue-ish skin and the yellow flowers....Anyway, here's the first flower....still not convinced though...the petal ...

copiapoa...NOT!

I bought this cactus a couple of years back, in a bulk sale from a local hobbyist, who wasn't sure what it was. My first reaction was....Copiapoa ! maybe a young dealbata. Later on it took some damage due to poor ventilation I think, but kept growing nicely. And now it's sending up floral tubes from...

Re: Aloe? Aloiampelos?

Actually there seems to be 2 variantions that also look similar, Aloe deltoideodonta v. candicans and Aloe deltoideodonta v. fallax. It's also a Madagascar species. They might develop more of a stem than ibitiensis does, so could be this one...

Re: Aloe? Aloiampelos?

The color and striation reminds a lot of Aloe ibitiensis. In the description on llifle is says it usually does not grow many leaves at the same time. It wouldn't really have much of a stem, though older plants that have dropped their older leaves will eventually develop a bit of a stem I guess. I di...

Re: Dialing down Copiapoa seedling care

I grew several Copiapoa species from seeds, and to be honest, I don't really treat them any different than other species, at seedling level and first couple of years anyway. They seem to do just fine. Though germination rates are a bit on the low side usually.
