Re: Purple and orange spots on ferocactus
I recently read on the BCSS forum someone submerged a Lithops with root mealies in methylated spirits. I have done it as well on some Pterocacti recently without any side effects. I don’t know a more specific term for it. It’s also sold as fuel for ‘stoves’. Here, it also has a blue tint to it. It c...

Re: Lots of orange lumps and bumps on my cacti
Thank you so much for your reply and info! I looked at the link about edema and for me that is better news than a fungal infection. I will be working to correct the environmental factors and be extra cautious about watering them and hopefully they will improve! Thanks again!! You're welcome. If you...

Re: Purple and orange spots on ferocactus
Can you maybe post additional images of the current situation? If it's a fungal infection, you can try a fungicide. Are there actually fungicides which work from the inside out? Does there exist something such as a systemic fungicide? I agree with Steve a good cultivation practice is key to a health...

Re: Distance of the artificial light.
Ok. Here's a link to the product page of your lamp: https://www.mars-hydro.com/tsl-2000-led-grow-light . At the top of the page you can scroll through some images, one of them is a PPFD chart. Just to be sure, your Mars Hydro has a dimmer right? So if you want to reach a PAR of 500 micromol/m²s, whi...

Re: Turbinicarpus tips
I have a few older ones which I got through the local botanical garden and they indeed stay 'inflated' for quite a while. I should probably water them less. Definitely given the location I am at. With T. pseudomacrochele I find it hard to tell when to water, because it's so densely spinded.

Re: To remove or to keep, that is the question
It seems to me you've already decided, so best to cut it off then.
IMO I would interested to see what happens next, but I'm not an experienced cactophile.

Re: Distance of the artificial light.
Well to start off, the columnar cacti will receive more light than the globular. If you know the brand of your growing light, it's worth looking up whether there is a chart available with the intensity of the lamp in relation to distance. If there is no such chart available, a light meter would be v...

Re: Turbinicarpus tips
=D> How often did you water them and what was the weather like during your growing season? If you buy loam, it's always interesting to do a sediment test to determine the amount of silt, sand, clay and organic particles. The test is quite easy and then you know what you're working with. The loam I h...

Re: Purple and orange spots on ferocactus
I think if you decide to go down the rabbit hole, knowing the acidity of your soil, water and fertilizing solution is important and practical. I did not yet test the pH of my mineral mix after watering with rain water. I flushed my pots 2 weeks ago with rain water. Since the pH of my soil is 6 and t...

Re: Purple and orange spots on ferocactus
As always, I follow these topics with great interest. I wonder if we could establish some guidelines? As I understood it, in the last watering(s) of the growing season you leave out any fertilizer and focus on (adding) calcium to strenghten the cell walls. But not magnesium, correct? Because magnesi...

It could be snails. Usually they leave behind a slimy trail. Did you take those pictures at a later moment? The damage seems already to be calloused over?

Re: Heating pad when sowing seeds
I only have 1 year experience with sowing. I used the guidelines from Succulenta (Dutch-Belgian Cactus Society). They suggest 20-24°C. They also write —if you are sowing many different species— the first 7-10 days 20°C, then 25°C for 7-10 days, then 30°C for 7-10 days and finally 25°C for the remain...
