Re: watering schedule

I used to water without any calendar, and found myself often confused and anxious about when the last time really was. So I use one since a year or more and it really gives me more peace of mind. My plants are divided between a few groups so I mark the day I water them. During intense heat I shorte...

watering schedule

Hi Everyone, How do you keep track of when to water your succulents? I used to not keep track all, then ev0lved to a (detailed) calendar system (with watering instructions per plant) and am now somewhere in between (having grown a bit more confidence). A calendar system works well with a smaller col...

Re: Why can't I identify cacti?

@DaveW: thank you for this article. I think this in combination with collecting cacti at a high rate is very challenging. There is a limit on how fast and how much we can process information in general. A bit comparable with remembering faces. I now find it difficult to buy a cactus (or any other pl...

Re: Do you like cristate or monstrose forms in cacti?

I'm briefly reading up on the topic as we speak and came across the following: https://mycotopia.net/topic/62972-what-causes-monstrose-and-cristate-growth/ The main cause appears to be some type of shock (disease, pest, frost, etc...) which causes a disturbance in the cell division. The normal singl...

Re: Do you like cristate or monstrose forms in cacti?

Do monstrose and cristate cacti not appear in the wild? In cultivation, what causes these physiological variations? If a cactus grows slower because of it or produces fewer flowers, is it then considered an unhappy cactus? I have a few (Cereus Peruvianus Monstrose Minor, Mammilaria Elongate Cristata...

Re: I need a hero

Hello everyone, thanks for stopping by I bought this fella a couple months (ish) ago from a local garden centre. Just recently it looks like he’s growing a white beard - is he going mouldy? :( Not sure what it is or what I can do to help him feel better. Any ideas? Thanks for your help A few sharp ...

Re: Rust disease on opuntia

I've had edema on an Opuntia Ficus Indica grown indoors (indeed because of bad watering habits, poor ventilation and high humidity). In my case the patches were white and less structured than those of Charles. If you pricked one of those white patches with a needle it felt like puncturing a hardened...

Re: Growing cacti without the use of heavy pesticides - a waste of time and money?

@ Mrs.Green, in relation to cacti and succulents I always have the feeling I cannot provide them with the right conditions to be 'happy'. It's also a question of experience. As the plants grow, you grow as well. Which is very satisfying. We're moving to a new place with a garden and a (sort of) gree...

I'm accepting bets. IMG_0084web.jpg  I’m on but you should know that I don’t have any possibility of paying you! :D I’m pretty sure that’s new growth, having a Selenicereus myself. Thanks! I'm beginning to suspect it's new growth as well. It had a slow start, so I'm happy it's branching...

Re: Growing cacti without the use of heavy pesticides - a waste of time and money?

I'm glad to come across this topic, since I had similar questions. I exclusively grow indoors (with the expection of some flowers on an outdoor windowsill). I have about 70 plants of which 30 are succulents. The only real issue I've had with succulents are mealybugs. They appear to always target the...

Re: New growth on Selenicereus?

I will keep photographing the new growth (bud or not) at regular intervals for educational purposes. Before the new growth was forming there was a darkish discoloration at the node. I observed other discolorations at other nodes as well. So hopefully new growth will sprout from there too.

Re: New growth on Selenicereus?

I've attached another image of the progress of the new growth for those who are interested. @greenknight, thanks again for the advice. Organizing anything plant related in a small apartment without a balcony is a challenge. I've been able to use the shared basement for storage of soil, pots, etc... ...

Re: New growth on Selenicereus?

Indeed, time will tell! I hope it's a flower bud and doesn't bloom when I'm on holiday. Does it flower as soon at it is dark or should I expect to stay up (very) late to observe? @greenknight, thank you for the video. I used to watch a lot of her video's. The guy I bought it from had a larger specim...

New growth on Selenicereus?

Hi Everyone, At ELK 2019 I bought a Selenicereus Grandiflorus. At that time (according to the owner) it was a 1 year old cutting from a larger plant. Last winter the tip of the plant went brown because of underwatering (I think). I trimmed the brown part to be certain. It was dry and not soft. I not...
