Re: Trying to Move Cactus from Los Angeles to San Jose

Hey Pone. The plant will probably weigh around 60lbs. No nursery will take reasonability of a plant that is not theirs. The seller will need to pack it up and send UPS or Fedex. I've shipped a few "large" plants that way. Costs about $60.. You can take it to a UPS store and they will pack...

Re: Trying to Move Cactus from Los Angeles to San Jose

If you take it out of the pot and wash the roots off, wrap it in bubble wrap and tie a couple of timber stakes to it to prevent it breaking you can lay them down and sometimes get them in your car laying from back to front and projecting over the front passenger seat with the seat belt round it to ...

Trying to Move Cactus from Los Angeles to San Jose

I am trying to find a way to move a six-foot high cactus in a pot from Los Angeles to the San Jose area of California. Does anyone know of a California nursery that is making regular runs from Southern to Northern California, who I could pay to haul some extra cargo up north?

Fairy Castle Cactus - Acanthocereus Tetragonus - How Firm Should it Be?

I purchased a Fairy Castle Cactus - Acanthocereus Tetragonus - by mail order. It feels "squishy" but the roots show no evidence of root rot. It does look water-starved and the roots are dried up. How firm should this species normally be? What would be possible causes for softness on the sp...

It looks like "Gumby" is the correct subvariety.

Re: Does Anyone Make Melon Scoops of Different Sizes?

I don't know about better, but that might be the only option I have. If anyone knows of a wood gouging set that has many different scoop sizes I would like to know about it. This looks pretty good: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KGFW3TY/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B01KGFW3TY&pd_rd_w=wb...

Re: What Species is This Cactus?

I have a feeling the original owner pulled off the needles, which makes identification a little harder. Safety first! My guess is Austrocylindropuntia verschaffeltii . But this can be also just stunted A. subulata . I think you are on the right track with Austrocylindropuntia, but mine has bi...

Re: Does Anyone Make Melon Scoops of Different Sizes?

Perhaps wood carving tools might be better? I would imagine you can get cheaper versions than these: https://www.workshopheaven.com/hand-tools/chisels/carving-tools.html I don't know about better, but that might be the only option I have. If anyone knows of a wood gouging set that has many differen...

Does Anyone Make Melon Scoops of Different Sizes?

I would like to have a set of round melon scoops of different sizes, from 1/8" up to about 2" that I can use to make precision cuts into the side of a cactus that has a small localized rot. Currently, I have a Cereus with a black spot about 3/16" wide, and I want to do the minimal dam...

I see some of the photos in this subgroup are larger than the 1024x768 maximum in effect for other groups. How do we accomplish posting larger images?

What Is This Species?

What is the species of the plant shown in the photo? It reminds me of a Peruvianus Monstrosus but the raised patterns are more horizontal than vertical. Is this at all rare?

Re: Any Advice on How to Design a Crane for Repotting Huge Cactus?

Pretty sweet. I was skeptical when i first read it but it turned out really well. I actually just had an accident at work, broken wrist, surgery, pins and anchors in my arm so i am gonna use your idea. Have 8 good sized repots i need to do and just being one arm and only my gf to help, i think this...
