Split rock dying..what is it?

Does anybody know what happened to this plant? It' not mine...I gifted it to a friend about a month ago. The store repotted it for me. She kept it in strong light but not full sun. Didn't water it until today. She says it's been like this for 10 days. Is it rot? Can it be saved? And why did it happe...

Thank you!!! Why didn't I think of that? It was that easy :) I barely had to use the tweezer.

Moon cactus..cut away rot?

Since I recently said goodbye to a moon cactus, I ended up getting another one the other day. I know they die eventually but I just love the bright color and think they are cute. Anyways, I inspected this at the store but didn't see this until a day later. It seems one of the "babies" is r...

Re: Just thirsty or a bit sick?

Yes, I've rarely seen flowering ones at the normal stores. IKEA keeps theirs really wet though, last time I bought from there they were soaked, or they happened to be freshly delivered that day. Watering enough is the tricky part. Our weather is so inconsistent. During a summer there can be weeks of...

Re: Just thirsty or a bit sick?

Thank you all for the advice! So, bigger pots it is, I need to buy new ones. Let's say I put one in each pot, what is an ok size (to last at least a year or more hopefully)? I'm a bit confused because sometimes I read the advice that cacti don't like the pot to be too big. Then I read they need lots...

Just thirsty or a bit sick?

Out of accident I came home with a new friend today, I wonder how that happens ;) To my newbie eyes I think it looks a bit pale... does it look healthy to you experts or maybe a bit sick? It has lost some spines as you can see the packaging was way too tight. I tried to water it now, but the soil is...

Re: Guessing at age

Wow those are huge! beautiful!
I have a feeling the plants we buy are fed with some super fertilizer, they are always so plump and shiny.
I wish I lived so I could have an outdoor garden with cacti, those of you that have it are lucky :)

Re: Guessing at age

That is interesting! The smallest pot is 2" the bigger 3.5" or so. I will try to repot them both this weekend then :) Wow at growing that large in Phoenix! Lucky you! Here, with long winters I guess we will have to make the best of it. I got the big plant at Lidl for approx $3. I love the ...

Guessing at age

I'm a newbie with cacti so I don't know much about species etc. I'm curious to know how old this bigger one could be? I'm guessing they are the same species, even though the furry on top is more yellow on the bigger one? The smaller one, I've had it for at least 2 years, but I only this year started...

Re: Advice for my first seedlings

Yes, that little one doesn't look so good. I hope that they all make it, but I'm prepared for that some of them won't. They are still so tiny.

That was a good thread, thanks! It was a guy in Sweden even, so if it worked for him, it should for me :)

Re: Advice for my first seedlings

First, thank you Greenknight for all the advice! I've been crazy busy lately and not on here for a while. I will figure out a good lighting solution before fall comes down heavy here. Right now we are back to heatwave. As I've been busy it took me a few extra weeks to do the transplant, now they hav...

Re: Advice for my first seedlings

Thank you! I think I'll stick to spraying then, I want them to grow as much as possible :) Winter... well I've never really done this proper dormant thing (because I didn't know about it) I just watered seldom and they were in a gloomy window. This was of course my bigger ones. This year I want to d...

Re: Advice for my first seedlings

Thank you :) Happy to hear that they are growing as they should! I will repot the Gymnos and press down the soil (never knew that!) 2 questions.. Soil... for my other cacti I now have a mix of about 2/3 pumice, 1/3 organic cacti mix (commercial Focus mix). Do I do the same with the seedlings or more...

Re: Advice for my first seedlings

They just keep getting darker and darker, is it still normal? The soil is disappearing, that always seems to happen in my pots. Do I leave it as is, add more soil or replant? The weather has turned unfortunately, cloudy darker days so they are not getting so much sun anymore.. (I had just sprayed wa...
