I agree with samhain, they can tolerate quite the beating in my experience. Digging a larger area around the plant can prevent too much root damage, but you may find the roots have spread far into the ground already.

A heating pad under the tray may help with the heat. I use one for my seedlings and they appreciate it during the night.

Do you have a photo of the bottom of the plant / the roots? Melocactus are notoriously difficult to root as mature plants. If you are not sure about your capabilities with them I would recommend starting with a smaller plant that has not yet matured.
