Astrophytum ornatum?
Hi, This fellow walked home with me today after a visit to a local home improvement store. I presume it's an Astrophytum ornatum? I could be wrong though. When I saw it at the store there was a black "thing" at the top in/near one of the areola. Unfortunately, it got lost on the way ...

Re: Grotesque Notocactus Schlosseri
Here is our friend stripped down to its roots and after repotting. Handsome fellow now. 33_Notocactus Schlosseri_IMG_5817.jpg 33_Notocactus schlosseri _IMG_5835.jpg And yes, the soil looks very organic but there is a lot of sand and other gritty stuff in there. It's the standard cactus soil Kakteen ...

Re: Packaging for shipment
I've orderd a few cacti from ebay in the past. Always with the pot. The shipper always surrounded the base of the cactus with tape to the top rim of the container to keep the soil from spilling out. If you said you got your cactus from a reputable nursery I'm surprised. What kind of half azz shippi...

Re: Grotesque Notocactus Schlosseri
It looks normal and healthy to me. Pot it up with the current soil level, straighten it up a bit while you do Ball cacti are, well, ball shaped. Shorter growing cacti generally remain thinner at the base than mid way up the body. Many Notocacti are often conspicuous for their sunken heads, and also...

Re: Packaging for shipment
I think I only purchased one plant in its pot. It is not usually offered as an option. They did me a special favor. The shipper put a foam ring around the top of the pot to hold the soil in. It was securely taped to the pot. Then something was placed over the pot to protect the plant. It may have b...

Grotesque Notocactus Schlosseri
My first online plant order from a (reputable) cactus nursery here in Germany left me a bit disappointed. One of the reasons is this grotesque Notocactus Schlosseri. 33_Notocactus Schlosseri_IMG_5802.jpg 33_Notocactus Schlosseri_IMG_5803.jpg Clearly, it has outgrown its tiny pot (5 cm dia) and needs...

Packaging for shipment
Recently, I ordered for the first time cacti online from a very reputable cactus nursery here in Germany. I chose the option to ship them in pots thinking that this would avoid the stress of having to repot them. But when I opened the individually wrapped pots I quickly realised that this was a bad ...

Thanks! Much appreciate your patience and feedback. Best.greenknight wrote: ↑Sun Mar 28, 2021 5:06 am Best to baby them along for a few months, it would set them back a lot to change their growing conditions at this early stage.

Re: Seedling: 1st time (Updated: 1 month later)
The "wings" are the seed leaves (cotyledons), more prominent on some species than others - on many species they're more like tiny horns. Yes, they'll be absorbed. Thanks for the explanation! I've been seeing the "tiny horn version" on other seedlings and I've been wondering. Do ...

Re: Rate my setup
I'd be interested in hearing your experiences with your light meter. I had a rather low opinion of them as people have posted about some which IMO clearly don't work. But I would be curious to hear what you have to say because they're all different and the phone apps have clear limitations I'll sha...

Re: Seedling: 1st time (Updated: 1 month later)
Probably just genetic variation. I'd just wait and see how they do. The yellow one might develop into a variegate, but it wouldn't be surprising if it just dies. There's no rush about doing anything, give them a chance Thanks for taking the time to comment. What will actually happen to these "...

Thelocephala aerocarpa
Hi, in my first attempt to growing from seed I planted 16 pots with 15 different species. All germinated with only a couple with poor yields. The pot with Thelocephala aerocarpa had 3 of 10 seeds germinate 9 days after sowing and they made it to the pinhead stage (1 - 2 mm, no spines). Two died thou...

Re: Seedling: 1st time
This is one month later. Crazy! 23_Pachycereus pringlei_IMG_5689.jpg There is this yellowish-green coloured one. Any ideas what might cause that? Already in the photo form a month ago one can see that the seedling is lighter in color compared to the others. It just faded in the last few weeks. Then,...

Shane, i did not know you can get light meters on your phone! thats pretty cool... ill have to check that out. i dont know how many lumens actually make it to the seedlings, but i will post some update pictures :) I'd be also very interested in what how much light in lux (lumens/m2) reaches your se...
