Re: Ilvin's Lithops Seedlings

Today I transplanted the seedlings from the second pot. I wasn't seeing quite the difference in water uptake that the first pot was having and I wanted to transplant before that started happening. It went pretty well - there was a lot of roots in that little pot and I had to untangle them, but the l...

Re: Ilvin's Lithops Seedlings

All right, I have officially transplanted the square pot. I want to emphasise - this was ONLY the square pot. The final count came in at... 149 lithops. They were surprisingly easy to separate. I made sure the pot was dry before I pulled them out so they weren't sticking to each other. I only pulled...

Re: Ilvin's Lithops Seedlings

Hi, as I'm in the Southern hemisphere its actually autumn, not spring. My adult lithops has in fact just finished flowering and won't split for months yet. However, lithops seedlings do change their leaves more than once in the first year and some of these guys are doing that. The issue is more than...

Re: Ilvin's Lithops Seedlings

That was my feeling, but they're still so little. Hopefully I don't lose too many of them.

Thanks for the link, thats a very helpful site!

Re: Ilvin's Lithops Seedlings

These guys are now roughly 1 year old. 20240319_211042.jpg 20240319_211048.jpg Unfortunately, I am starting to run into a few problems. I've got some lithops starting to stack, while a couple of others just will not take up water: 20240319_211135.jpg 20240319_211809.jpg The grey one (lithops lesliei...

Re: Purple and orange spots on ferocactus

I apologise, I was in a rush: cap is the least useful measurement - its 40mL in a cap. Oddly enough my fertiliser is the Osmocote's liquid version of the slow release, I wonder why they didn't include the calcium? In any case it would be easy to switch to the slow release, which I will do, and there...

Re: Purple and orange spots on ferocactus

I hear you with the calcium. The cactus might well be deficient even with the Ca in the water, its odd that there's none in the fertilizer but even after only a couple of years growing cacti I'm becoming skeptical that people making cacti/succulent products actually know what they're doing. The bark...

Re: Purple and orange spots on ferocactus

Hi Mike, it does look like pictures I've seen of sunburn but I'm fairly sure the isopropyl alcohol did that. Its on the exact area where I sprayed it. The consensus does seem to be its not fungal, which is good, but I do wish I knew what was upsetting the poor cactus. It certainly looks worse now af...

Re: Purple and orange spots on ferocactus

I tend to water with 50% rainwater 50% tap, because my tap water is hard. The pH is likely still a little on the high side, but that hasn't changed in the two years I've had the cactus without this problem. I guess its still possible its low on calcium, so I might add some. I re-potted it in fresh s...

Re: Purple and orange spots on ferocactus

Sure, I'll attach a picture of the analysis, but from my basic research I think its ok. Or at the very least unlikely to be bad enough to be the cause of this. 20240205_180536.jpg In any case, I've damaged the cactus further. I sprayed it with isopropyl alcohol yesterday evening in the hope that it ...

Re: Purple and orange spots on ferocactus

Not this cactus, its outside all summer although I bring it in most of winter to avoid rain.

Its outside in full sun now, I actually moved it to get more sun this year, and its quite windy here so it has plenty of air movement.

Re: Purple and orange spots on ferocactus

Hello everyone, this problem has unfortunately got worse. It had stalled for a month or so and I was expecting summer to fix the issue if its fungal. That doesn't seem to have happened. More spots are appearing, mostly towards the base of the cactus, usually around the spines. They always start off ...

Re: Flowers drying out before they bloom

I have one more guess, but it is just a guess. How long have you had the cactus? Have you repotted and changed the soil within the last 2 years? Do you fertilize? I know cacti need little food compared to other plants, but its possible that if the potting mix is old its no longer getting the nutrien...

Re: can you tell me what these are?

Its hard to say from your photo, but I assume you mean the white bits on the spines? They look like mealybugs to me. Mealybug treatment varies from area to area - I use isopropyl alcohol because the systematic insecticides are quite aggressive and not available in my country. That said, I've only ev...

Re: Ilvin's Lithops Seedlings

At ~8months old the seedlings have almost all got their true leaves. There's one or two late comers, and one or two little ones that don't seem to be developing and probably won't survive. That might not be a bad thing - space is becoming more and more of a problem. The lithops in the smaller and le...
