Re: Fertilizers explained (2-part presentation) -- with 6/2023 update

Are you talking about a potting mix with a large amount of Sphagnum Peat Moss? If so, yes, when that dries it is very hard to wet, and water will just run right off of it. I often water my plants with pure water before fertilizing. I don't have potting mix with a lot of sphagnum except for some pot...

Re: Fertilizers explained (2-part presentation) -- with 6/2023 update

Sounds like you might have a compacted soil problem -- too much soil in the mix? I think you're doing all you can do right now. Don't know what you have in mind for a new mix, but if it gives the roots of you cacti better aeration, you won't have any watering troubles like what you've been going th...

Re: Fertilizers explained (2-part presentation) -- with 6/2023 update

Hi guys, Question: so I love this fertilizer mixture you all helped me make. However, I noticed a little problem (with my potted plants, not the fertilizer mixture). Because I have a bunch of plants, when I make my four gallons, I want to make sure I thoroughly soak all the cacti but as we all know,...

Re: Fertilizers explained (2-part presentation) -- with 6/2023 update

Ok fellow cacti comrades. I finally did my first watering with the fertilizer. I’m super excited to see the results. One question, however; I ended up using 4 gallons of this solution to water and thoroughly drench my plants. And it was time consuming to make 2 gallons twice. Do you guys this it wo...

Re: Fertilizers explained (2-part presentation) -- with 6/2023 update

When we water our cacti using this fertilizer solution, is it ok to just water the cacti and drench them or should we only try to water the substrate and avoid drenching the body of the cactus? Asking because I have about 90 individually potted cacti in 3, 1020 trays and that would be quite the cumb...

Re: Are you growing your cacti in a soilless mix?

I will try this for sure. Generally, is there a rule of thumb for the maximum time allowable for soil to be wet? Say, bone dry, a pot and substrate weigh 1lb. Fully wet, 1.5lb. And it takes 5 days for the pot and substrate to weight 1lb again. Is 5 days too long or about right? I know variables suc...

Re: Are you growing your cacti in a soilless mix?

Do you guys think that growing cacti in Phoenix, Arizona would do well with a soiless mix? Or does the extreme aridness and heat during summer warrant perhaps a 25% organic/75%inorganic mix? I mainly use terracota and plastic (that Terracota thread about the hawarthias really got me thinking, Steve!...

Re: So I decided to sow

Wow. This thread is legit. Thank you. I have been out of the forum for a while. Planning to come back again . I have learned a lot here. I have also changed my setup for sowing seeds. Maybe post something here on the near future. I sowed like 50 different types of seeds myself, about 3 weeks ago. I...

Re: What is this?!

I just noticed something like that on my soil too. I was inspecting my seedlings and I noticed this extremely strange, tiny, grayish-white blob. I spotted it because as I was sweeping over the seedlings with my flashlight, I noticed a part atop the soil shining and moving. It was very faint, but you...

Re: Seeding Journal

I can’t get to seem to get my rebutia to germinate. They’ve been in their pot for about 16 days and I see no signs of any germination. Is this normal?
