Re: Opuntia - Horse manure fungus? or?

Just an update on this Opuntia sp. It is doing wonderfully and remains free from any more mealybugs or other pests. What I ended up doing, partly because it was the only option I had available, was this: 1. I picked and washed clean any egg deposits or adult bugs off the plant. 2. Then I used a hard...

Re: Opuntia - Horse manure fungus

Hello Wildhorse1, to me your images do not seem to be those of a fungus. They remind me much more of a mealybug infestation. Harald Oh wow, I have never dealt with mealy bugs before and was sure it was fungus, but from the pics and info in Steve's post and info online, that looks 100% right. Thank ...

Opuntia - Horse manure fungus? or?

Today I collected a local Opuntia species from our horse stable. This was growing for some time through some very old, aged horse manure. It is quite likely that this local native Opuntia has the thickest biggest pads I have ever seen on this species. I removed it because the horses had trampled par...

Re: Why do people Lurk and not Post?

I am not sure why this post even exists, however, I suppose I am one of those 'LURKERS' eek! I joined this forum to learn, because I am not as knowledgeable as most of those that regularly post. So I read what I can when I can. Opening my mouth, or in this case my keyboard, would only entertain thos...

Re: Who Sells a Shipping Kit for Large Cactus Stems?

I have seen some shipped in empty egg cartons. I believe they would slightly modify the egg carton as needed to fit different diameters.

(By the way, I don't see a request from you. Or, like others, I also overlook it in the "Hello from Colorado, USA" thread you have written?)
I deleted my request.

Re: About the requests for ID, again. We need to consider moderating

When I started in the 1960's everybody bought a basic book on cactus and succulent cultivation and one on identification of common succulent plants. No internet in those days and people were able to read up on the basics. I cannot believe the modern generation have now lost the ability to read and ...

Re: Hello from Colorado, USA

Welcome, Wildhorse1! Nice kitty. Good start to your cactus collecting. I'm kinda new hear, too, after looking for a proper cactus soil formula. Currently over in the Salt Lake Valley.. Plenty of wild horses over here in the West Desert. Cactus, too. My collection focuses primarily on cold hardy nat...

Re: Hello from Colorado, USA

Hello and welcome! Nice plants, now carefully through the winter. Be aware with pests - study their stems and roots, even rootball outside. Do you have native Colorado cacti? Where do you hold them (open air/greenhouse/window?) Thank you. I never have really thought about pests on them before comin...

Hello from Colorado, USA

Hi all, my name is Michael. My interest in cactus started early in life, some 46 years ago when I won an Old Man (of the Desert) cactus in a Wrigley's Big Red gum contest when I was about 7 years old. My ability to keep cactus was short lived, but my interest was very much still going. My cactus kee...
