Re: Pachypodium pruning: suggestions are welcome

I loved the way you trimmed you Pachypodium , tasuccs. It looks cool! Thanks! I'm quite pleased as it's been a year and a half long project, but more importantly we'll see how it affects future growth. Hallo tasuccs, thank you very much for the long post with loads of interesting details. [...] Wou...

Re: Pachypodium pruning: suggestions are welcome

BUT  * they never-ever said anywhere HOW to cut a bonsai!!! [-( So, I am fed up with those bonsai guys and won't look at their books anymore. To much effort, no outcome at all. This winter I am going to cut my Pachy. sukkulentum. Finally. Without any bonsais in my mind, but just as I cut my r...

Re: Pachypodium pruning: suggestions are welcome

I just had a glimps at llifle: http://www.llifle.com/Encyclopedia/SUCCULENTS/Family/Apocynaceae/11679/Pachypodium_succulentum According to that, our both flowers are untypical. Maybe we have hybrids? Oops! Not sure if I mentioned it earlier but mine is a bispinosum. Since by all accounts they're ve...

Re: Pachypodium pruning: suggestions are welcome

IMG_5502 Kopie.JPG This year my Pachy sukkulentum flowered! In contrast to earlier years, it first had its leaves and then started to flower. Also, this years flowers were totally white, without the rose hue around the rim. Well, I am grateful it flowered. ...but I have to admit: I have yet not dar...

Re: Pachypodium pruning: suggestions are welcome

I admit: I never use terracotta pots or pots from unglazed clay. The roots stick to the inside of the pots, and my watering is definitely not adjusted to them. Somehow, sometimes you need more or less than with plastic or glazed terracotta pots. So I can understand that you moved your plant. Yep, I...

Re: Pachypodium pruning: suggestions are welcome

Checking in again, sorry for responding late - forgot to activate notifications. I have read a few articles/ references of people saying the deeper the pot the more branches/ foliage you will get and the smaller the pot the thicker the caudex. Can anyone comment on this, please? Hi Florin - I notice...

Re: Lanky overgrown copiapoa humilis

the Cuttings and Offsets forum may give you some good ideas on what to prepare for next spring. If you get to that point and need some specific guidance, start a thread there and be sure to include photos of the plant before you commit to anything that could be a mistake. I'll definitely do that, t...

Re: Lanky overgrown copiapoa humilis

Thanks Steve and greenknight, good points. I guess I'll stick to some chunky lava rock top dressing for now to keep things steady and consider the chop chop as she wakes up for spring.

Re: Lanky overgrown copiapoa humilis

Hi 7george, thanks for your answer. Yes, I think it was a bit too dark in the greenhouse - it's actually outdoors now with full morning sun, the glass in the photo is a balcony railing. But that will only help with future growth, right? I'm debating whether to bury it deeper or root the top as a new...

Lanky overgrown copiapoa humilis

I was at a big nursery recently that has great selection and value but tends to be sloppy - and couldn't resist what appeared to be a (relatively) huge Copiapoa humilis (pictured below in a 12cm pot- you can't see the distinctive flower and black farina). On further inspection at home it appears to ...

Translucent spots on astro ribs?

I got what I thought was a very healthy looking astrophytum myriostigma at a local nursery a couple of weeks ago, and after a few days in bright shade put it in a spot that gets sun every day until about 2pm (my climate is similar to San Diego). I then noticed a tiny orangy-translucent mark on the e...

Re: Lopsided Notocactus

Thought I'd update since I had a chance to explore what seems to actually be a remarkable phenomenon over the past couple of months - this cactus seems to be able to lean itself back into the sun in a matter of days! I posted this question originally not because I was so interested in symmetry, more...

Re: Mesh pots?

Nordic style -- maybe these are not good for hot countries? Also if roots get out of wholes you should trim those for re-potting. "Nordic" seems to be slapped onto any product on Ali Express with "minimalist" design and light or earth colors. But in any case these do seem like t...

Re: Mesh pots?

I don't like white pots because they grow green algae on the inside pot walls. The general idea might be pretty clever ? Good to know! I always wondered why they aren't more common, and come to think of it, all the white plastic nursery pots I have sitting around aren't white on the inside. These c...

Mesh pots?

I recently saw something I hadn't come across before and seems new on the market - small square "mesh pots" with mostly solid walls and minimal air pruning strips around the sides. Most air pots and growbags are way too porous for most succulents, but these seem to have potential for provi...
