Re: bifurcate areole
Checking Escobaria photos, the answer to my question obviously is NO. The streaks off the areole separate Pelecyphora, Coryphantha and Neolloydia from Nino_G's list Does anyone have a suggestion as to a minimum reliable separation of Mammillaria from other closely similar genera, Escobaria or Orteg...

Re: Question on nomenclature
Thanks Antisepp I asked because when i type on google lobivia subdenudata automatically it brings me L. Ancistrophora but on WFO, or on Caryophyllales.org they are different I think that's because Hunt considered subdenudata to be a spineless form of ancistrophora, but currently I believe subdenuda...

Some spring flowers. Parodia haselbergii. Re: New Argentinian Pyrrhocactus?
Very interesting plant and description! I have never heard of there being a correlation between Pyrrhocactus and Neowerdermannia before though. Have I missed something there? I think the authors were referring to morphological similarities and the fact that this new species was first tentatively na...

Re: Post winter watering
I also don't start watering with full soak after dormancy. My thinking is that a little moisture will get the plants to start growing feeder roots, but it still gets cold early in the spring, so too much water will take too long to dry. Some plants start to push out spines as early as February, so I...

Re: First visit to Joshua Tree Nat. Park
Awesome Mojave flora! You didn't happen to see either of the two native Mammillaria species, did you? No, I didn't. Which ones do you mean? Probably referring to Cochemiea tetrancistra. I don't think any other Mammillaria (in California they're all Cochemiea now...) occurs in the area. Maybe dioica...

Those hummingbird nests are so well camouflaged, I could only spot the one in the Opuntia because of the black beak!

Re: Pereskiopsis Growing Guide
How long do people wait to water young pereskiopsis after repotting? I ask because I don't want them dry out any longer than they need to as they only have a few leaves. By young I'll assume you mean fresh cuttings. I pot fresh cut Pereskiopsis in moistened soil, place the pots in a humidity box (c...

Re: Zac's Seedlings 2024
If you are not sterilizing your organic component, be sure to periodically check for visible fungus or damping off of seedlings and begin drying out the pots if you spot something amiss. I think the particle size you posted is appropriate for seedlings. I use something of similar size with good resu...
