Re: New Argentinian Pyrrhocactus?

Very interesting plant and description! I have never heard of there being a correlation between Pyrrhocactus and Neowerdermannia before though. Have I missed something there? I think the authors were referring to morphological similarities and the fact that this new species was first tentatively na...

Re: Post winter watering

I also don't start watering with full soak after dormancy. My thinking is that a little moisture will get the plants to start growing feeder roots, but it still gets cold early in the spring, so too much water will take too long to dry. Some plants start to push out spines as early as February, so I...

Re: First visit to Joshua Tree Nat. Park

Awesome Mojave flora! You didn't happen to see either of the two native Mammillaria species, did you? No, I didn't. Which ones do you mean? Probably referring to Cochemiea tetrancistra. I don't think any other Mammillaria (in California they're all Cochemiea now...) occurs in the area. Maybe dioica...

Those hummingbird nests are so well camouflaged, I could only spot the one in the Opuntia because of the black beak!

Re: Pereskiopsis Growing Guide

How long do people wait to water young pereskiopsis after repotting? I ask because I don't want them dry out any longer than they need to as they only have a few leaves. By young I'll assume you mean fresh cuttings. I pot fresh cut Pereskiopsis in moistened soil, place the pots in a humidity box (c...

Re: Zac's Seedlings 2024

If you are not sterilizing your organic component, be sure to periodically check for visible fungus or damping off of seedlings and begin drying out the pots if you spot something amiss. I think the particle size you posted is appropriate for seedlings. I use something of similar size with good resu...

Re: MrXeric's seedlings 2022

This Mammillaria pennispinosa ML 632 has flowered for the first time. I love the fuzzy spines! Wow, that's a really cool species! Never seen a Mamm with the fuzzy spines before. Yeah, it's such a cool little Mamm! The fuzzy spines (fuzzy hooks!) are the primary reason I wanted to grow this species.

Awesome pictures keith. I'd love to hike out there one day. I particularly enjoyed looking at that E. dasyacanthus growing out of that crack in the limestone boulder.

Re: Zac's Cacti

I do like the look of shallow pots. More even drying is a great bonus. :D One thing though is that some species can have pretty long tuberous roots, often longer than the depth of the bowl, so I am stuck with using taller pots.

Re: MrXeric's flowers and things

Epithelantha chihuahuensis. I cross pollinated several flowers from each plant, but only one plant produced a fruit (with only 2 seeds!) That is not a lot, but usually the fruit only contains 5-7 seeds, maybe 8 or 9 if you are really lucky! Yeah, I wonder if small number of seeds is due to in...

This Mammillaria lasiacantha SB 1063 (Hipolito, Coahuila, Mexico) has flowered for the first time. It's grafted on a Selenicereus megalanthus seedling. Tiny, dainty little flower.
