Wintering outdoors in So Cal
I have my collection in pots, both plastic and clay. In the past I have over-wintered them in a rented greenhouse but would like to save the expense and time and winter them outdoors. Would like to know if any grower in California has had trouble with rot or any other negative results keeping them o...

Sources for Columnar plants
I have a large cacti collection but prefer columnar cacti. For many reasons, usually practical, growers by far favor globular or smaller varieties. Anyone know of a source where I can purchase these plants? I am looking for all genera but in particular for Armatocereus and Pilosocereus. Thanks, Duane

Top dressing my plants.
I have never top dressed my cacti with stones although it enhances the appearance of the plant greatly. I have not done this for no other reason that I feel I cannot tell the moisture content of the soil when it is covered by this material. I would like to hear ideas on how others out there who do t...

Stubborn Pilosocereus palmeri
I put a large 6 ft, multibranched Pilosocereus palmeri (leucocephalus) in the ground, in a DG mix type of soil. The plant was received with very few course roots and it appears as it was used as a "mother" plant for cuttings at the nursery where I bought it. So far the plant has just basic...

From Escondido California
My name is Duane. What a wonderful discovery is this website and discussion forum. As I am out of the country for several months out of the year(Argentina) and when I am at home (Escondido CA), I work many hours. Therefore, attending society meetings and events is difficult. My interests vary but, a...

Best method of improving soil
I have my home in Southern Califonia and have my back yard landscaped with cacti and some succulents. Most of my life, I have grown these plants and living in S. California they practically grow themselves when in pots. But when I bought a home, I inherited the soil that came with it, which being fr...
