Re: Euphorbia Inermis how old is this plant?

Thanks. Didn't really consider they could be grown from cuttings too. Just assumed it started from a small plant. I didn't ask the seller how old it was but they had two available. I might get it if it's still available next month :) for my birthday. I did get a small plant though...I wonder how man...

Euphorbia Inermis how old is this plant?

I just seen these at my local garden centre in London who specialise in rare succulents and cacti. I was wondering how old they could be? To be honest i think the asking price is very good 170 pounds for a one of a kind specimen like this. https://i.ibb.co/XS3MVWx/8-AEBD3-F0-9370-4301-B664-BFEDC2367...

Re: Is Cephalocereus Senilis very rare?

Here in the states Cephalocereus senilis is only available from 1-2 nurseries. They look like they are 3-4 years old. These may have been started from seed around the time that the Köhres seed was once again obtainable. Their seed sold out quickly. I bought 100 myself and the seedlings resembled th...

Re: Is Cephalocereus Senilis very rare?

:D Once you have seen it you will not mistake C. senilis. As said the hair like spines are thicker, coarser and stiffer. Not soft fluffy and cotton like. Not seen it for sale for years in the UK. https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=P3YlnU3M&id=0BFE86545293A87D949C9094F7FCDF...

Re: Terracotta pots- a safer choice for the novice growers ?

I live in England and my cacti are mostly kept indoors. I've lost quite a few cacti in plastic pots. Even with a gritty mix it just never dries out quick enough. So now I only use clay pots and so far not lost a single plant this way.

Re: Is Cephalocereus Senilis very rare?

Very interesting thanks for the replies. Glad I'm not alone in thinking this one is much less common. I might have posted early as I just noticed one in my collection. Can anyone confirm if this is it please? If you click on the thumbnail it will enlarge. https://i.ibb.co/wJpJLLh/0128-EEB8-1051-43-A...

Is Cephalocereus Senilis very rare?

Just wondering is this is quite rare as I don't think I've seen it for sale before. It looks very similar to the more common type of old man of the Andes cacti out there like Espostoa etc.

Re: Growing advice for cactus

Thats a very nice specimen thanks for sharing. Looks like its growing nicely vertically. I wonder if it will start to dip down and crawl along the ground below the pot at some point?

Re: Growing advice for cactus

Thanks! I wasn't show how deep the pot should be but if they work well on drain pipes then I guess a very shallow pot would be fine. I've also seen photos of these growing from hanging pots where only the base has contact with soil and they look healthy growing that way as well. But I guess letting ...

Re: Growing advice for crested Cleistocactus Strausii

Finding the right growing conditions (type of soil, type of pot, etc...) takes time. Cleistocacti can have a little bit of organic material in their mix, although I have one in a completely mineral soil. Let's see how that goes. Dressing the soil with gravel allows a better water distribution thoug...

Re: Growing advice for crested Cleistocactus Strausii

What type of soil do you have now? It's true about the layer of gravel, but don't put it on the existing soil before you know what type of soil it is. The gravel could prevent evaporation of water. Especially if the existing soil is not free draining enough. An appropriate soil is an important star...

Growing advice for cactus

I've had two rot so I was wondering if these require particular care? Just got a new one yesterday I don't want it to rot too. One tip I heard was to put a top layer of gravel so the edges of the cactus does not touch the wet surface of the soil after watering as it could rot with the cresting being...

Re: Lithops Optica Rubra growing advice

Thanks Keith
I'm not sure if these are about to grow a new set of leaves yet but they are very shriveled so I give them a tiny bit of water. Like you said I'll plumb them up then leave them alone.
The mix they have come in seem to be fine, extremely well draining.

Lithops Optica Rubra growing advice

I've had a lot of Lithops that have all swelled up and rotted so I just looking for some advice on some new Lithops I got today. I heard these optical rubras are the hardest to look after due to their colour and the unique conditions of its native land. I heard some Lithops only need misting once a ...

Re: Magnificus or Warasii?

I'm pretty sure M. matanzanus remains solitary even in cultivation? I have seen other Melocactus species offset, but it was always from the cephalium rather than basally on the stem. Also, just under $27 USD for 3-4 cephalium bearing plants is a steal in the current market (here in the US at least)...
