Re: Melocactus matanzanus
I just lost a nice melo to rot unfortunately, discovered it last night. I hadn't watered it over winter for four months, until it got a good soak two weeks ago. Maybe I should have given it less water more frequently.

Seedlings in cold temperatures
I have dozens of seedlings from six species in a temperature controlled box. Now that they've all germinated and are 1-2 months old, I want to make room to germinate more seeds. Can I move my seedlings into plastic bags in winter temperatures? The temp is fine for adult cactuses (5-10C), but I'm wor...

Re: Is this euphorbia done for?
hmmm, if it would be just corking, it would be fine, but there's brown patches up there as well. Is the brown / grey part still firm ? Or mushy ? Or just dried out and dead ? I didn't know about corking - just looked it up, so thanks for that. Everything feels firm and solid actually. I'll repot an...

Is this euphorbia done for?
Does anyone know what's wrong with this plant?
I don't know its history, except that it was with several other common cactuses suffering from root rot, and everything was very root bound.
Is the plant salvageable? Perhaps by cutting off and rooting the green tips? Thanks for any advice.

Oh no, sorry for your loss! Do you know what you could have done differently?mikethecactusguy wrote: ↑Wed Jun 23, 2021 1:51 am we all loose plants. We all do stupid things. Its part of the hobby. I had to trash this Melocactus today. Scale and root loss . A soggy mess. It was fine last month

Re: Are some Echinocereus painfully slow?
never learned the fahrenheit scale (for instance , I just can't read when people here talk on fahrenheits To roughly convert from F to C, you can subtract 30 then halve the result. That way you can convert quickly in your head, and it will be accurate enough over the range of "normal" air...

Re: Cutting from large cereus in winter
Thanks, sand is a great idea for rooting. I have the cut currently healing in a cool room, and as you say I'll keep it inside until spring.
I think I'll also use sand to root some offsets from another cactus I have (mammillaria I think), then pot them once I see roots.

Cutting from large cereus in winter
My neighbour has a large cereus in his yard, around 4m tall with lots of branches and probably 50 years old. I'm going to take a 1 metre cutting (with his permission) and plant it in the same position in my yard, under the eaves where it's fairly dry. I'm wondering if I should take it now and let it...
