Re: Distance of the artificial light.

I bought a similar style 150 watt LED last fall. I placed my Madagascar Euphorbia at the outside of the light area since I grow them with morning light up to about 1 pm in the summer. They are right up against my house which faces exactly east. The plants and seedlings that want the most light are ...

Re: Distance of the artificial light.

Ok. Here's a link to the product page of your lamp: https://www.mars-hydro.com/tsl-2000-led-grow-light . At the top of the page you can scroll through some images, one of them is a PPFD chart. Just to be sure, your Mars Hydro has a dimmer right? So if you want to reach a PAR of 500 micromol/m²s, wh...

Re: Distance of the artificial light.

Soon cooler temperatures will force all my Cacti back into the basement for winter. See images. Is there a preferred average perfect distance that the light should be measured from the top of the cacti? Thank you for sharing your experience. Last year most of these did not hibernate many produce so...

Re: Distance of the artificial light.

Well to start off, the columnar cacti will receive more light than the globular. If you know the brand of your growing light, it's worth looking up whether there is a chart available with the intensity of the lamp in relation to distance. If there is no such chart available, a light meter would be ...

Re: 9 inches of rain in 3 hours.

When all else fails if you cannot get the soil to dry out quickly enough you can always repot in dry soil, even in winter, and then not water until the growing season again. However as Nachtkrabb and Aiko say as long as they dry out in a reasonable time it will be OK. We get all the gardeners rubbi...

Re: 9 inches of rain in 3 hours.

Don't get too hooked up on the numbers. Just water the plants when the soil is dry. And when in doubt to water, just skip it. Don't just water every two weeks no matter what, if that is what you do. So just have a look how dry the soil is after the most recent soaking. And water when the soil seems...

Re: 9 inches of rain in 3 hours.

Hello JCcares, I heartily do agree with Aiko: Numbers just give us an orientation, but I would never take them absolutely. Since about 4weeks, our much too hot & dry summer is "switched off" & we get loads of rain. Really much on a daily basis. This is not our the first rainy summ...

9 inches of rain in 3 hours.

Some in the USA know of Mondays East Coast storms. Long story short I was away on a holiday and my 50 or more cacti my babies were left out in this rain storm. When I got home Tuesday they all were soaked saturated with water. (Never seen anything like it before. I water every two weeks. I just wate...

Re: Temperature?

Depends on how hardy the species or genera are? 32F (= 0C) is freezing point and will mark some plants and will kill the more tropical ones. If you have to leave them outside at such low temperatures cover them with a layer of newspapers and a sheet of polythene or similar over that until the tempe...

Re: Temperature?

Hi Joe, Based on years of experience, I can tell you that overnight lows in the upper 40s won't be a problem as long as you keep your cacti dry. I think you have all of them in your greenhouse, and if that's the case, you'll be fine. If you watered recently, hold off on watering again until the ove...

Temperature?

Tonight where I live in NC the temperature will drop for a few hours to 48 degrees Fahrenheit.

Can I keep all my 98 different cacti outside while the temperature drops below 50?

Thank you very much 🙏🏽

Re: Seedlings/how often water?

Joe, I have not really grown a lot of cacti seedlings, but what I have found with my mix is that I get a lot of mineral build up. I need to flush the pots with clear water or even acidified water to remove the salt build up. I am suspecting my soil mix. I added some rinsed Coir and I am not 100% su...

Thank you Keith. You were the guy I was going to ask because I remember seeing lots of seedlings on your account. Appreciate you Sir🙏🏽
