Re: Opuntia Conundrum
As I said in my last post. I started to throw away the part in the pot that looked really rotten and beyond hope. And pulling up on it I realized it had roots so I stopped and tried to put it back like it was. Low and behold, where it looked like there was nothing but dead cactus it's putting up a pa...

Re: Escobaria missouriensis x E. avivipar Intergrades?
I sort of study the Cold hardy cactus websight https://coldhardycactus.com/collections/all. While I don't believe they have any missouriensis (they have 1 but sold out),they do have several vivipara. I think if it was possible to hybridize they would have done it. But that is just a guess. They do h...

Re: Big Bend National Park
Fabulous shots (as usual)! Echinocereus russanthus is one my favorites. If you have the patience to grow them from seed, try SB420. It has some of the most red and, longest spines of any I've seen of this species. Thanks I was looking at what Mesa had last night in russanthus. You made up my mind. ...

How to stress a Jade plant
I always see Jade plants in the store with light green leaves, and red/orange around the edges. But I have never been able to duplicate. I have brought them home like that and in a few weeks they are the normal dark green. I have left them in the sun to the point of sunburn Let them go without water....

Re: Cacti seedling growth in 3 days?
I somehow question your method of sterilizing in the microwave. The soil has to be damp for it to work. Not sure what else could have gone wrong. But it just looks to me like sterilization didn't work. As said,I would get seeds from somewhere like Mesa gardens. If you are going to take the time and ...

Re: Opuntia Conundrum
It could very well be etiolated. The pot gets put under shelter when rain/storms are possible. Which lately possibility has been a LOT,but actually hasn't happened. Around here 30% chance of thunderstorms could spell hail, heavy rain and wind, while away at work. It often isn't predictable. I am just...

Re: Opuntia Conundrum
They have rooted and taken hold. A seller on ebay I bought some pads from last summer says you can't kill these It isn't in this picture. But as long as they have warm bright sunlight I believe it. One of those dried up Ebay pads that looked like beef jerky took root and put up a new pad. I think I ...

Re: Cactus sick with some white/beige spots/patches
You might have scale. We really need a close up of the spots to really tell. Here is a video that might help you decide if that is what it is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqTq4yB1ayI If you do put alcohol on it,after a day or 2 for it to recover I would get it outside in the sun and wind. Cacti ...

Re: Whats the best pre-made cactus soil?
Interesting thing about ferti-lome cactus soil. I was just looking at a bag I had. It "claims" to have "Calcitic and Dolomitic limestone". Good for South US and mexican cacti. Astrophytum for example. None of the other bagged mixes list having that. It gives no %. I myself have b...

Re: Growing strategy ?
My problem is I have had no strategy  I am going to have to develop one because I have more plants than I know what to do with. It's one of those things where you wake up one day and go "how in the *&%^ did this happen". Seedlings, off sets, plants growing faster than I thought th...

Re: Interesting close call
It isn't out of the woods yet. There is a spot on the new growth that doesn't seem to be drying up. I had it in the sun again quite a bit today turning it a quarter turn every soo often. But it's starting to get sunburned,so I better ease off. I'm tempted to cut this spot off,but I think i will just...

Interesting close call
It was HOT here last week. (Hot for KC anyway) So I gave all of my cacti a good watering this morning. I was watering my Cardon when I notices bluish black on the areoles toward the shady side. ](*,) It looked just like a cactus someone posted problems with a month or so back. His had rot towards th...

Re: Opuntia Conundrum
Looks like we have success. :D I'm afraid the one in the ground the infection might be spreading. But it's so hydrated it looks like it's ready to pop. It will be interesting to see what happens with it. The piece with the new paddle is no longer wrinkled. And I think the new paddle has doubled in s...
