Re: I am 45.If it is late to sow Ariocarpus seeds?
I am 63 and have recently started a couple batches from seed. As the saying goes " the best time to plant a tree was 10 years ago. The next best time is today!" That being said. Miles to go has some nice young ones very reasonable. I bought a couple last year and I am getting ready to orde...

Re: Water?
Thank you. The saying "If you aren't sure it needs water, well then don't water it" is kind of hard to stick to at times

Re: When to repot Lithops
Thanks for the reply. If I get all 3 to new leaves I will try to separate them. Dry it isn't going to happen without some serious damage.
I am going to get a few cacti from Miles to go,and I am going to order 3 or 4 lithops as well. I'll get some experience one war or another

Re: Is there a market for rare seed grown cacti species?
Not sure what you have. But sounds like you have been watching Ebay. And I believe if you don't want to just give them away, that is the way to go. Depending on how much time and effort you want to spend. I have watched some of Tee Dee cacti go for over a thousand dollars. I myself will probably just...

Re: When to repot Lithops
Thanks for the reply. I just tried to separate them and backed out. I think I would have torn the roots completely off at least one. I'll give them a few days and put them in a bigger pot with cactus soil and construction sand. They were very reasonable, and I think I will go back and get a couple mo...

When to repot Lithops
I am somewhat new to Lithops. Inherited some years ago and killed them in short order. Got these at a local nursery a few days ago. They are in mostly organic soil, and I am wondering when do I get them out of it. Normally with a cactus caked in peat. I blast the roots clean with a garden hose. As so...

Re: Rot or Not? Please help
People have been keeping cacti in terra cotta since long before I was born (I am 63). It is what I keep the majority of my cacti in. You simply have to repot every few years, which you need to do in plastic as well. I keep mine in terra cotta because I keep them outside in summer, and where I live rai...

I can't resist armchair quarterbacking. I see you are in Illinois. I believe I would have waited till may or so,which has been my experience greatest success time for growing anything. But then again, maybe it will be fused together by then and take off.
I hope it works

Re: Overwintering Suggestions for Cactus
Kansas City has been around -10F the last 4 nights. (I live fairly close to Arrowhead stadium. No way I would have went to that football game)
I guess Canadian -30C= minus 22F. It's just brutal no matter how you look at it!

Re: Rot or Not? Please help
You didn't say where you are. But you are talking "come spring". So that must mean it's winter where you are :) I can't tell what the spots are from your picture. But if it were mine I believe I would just unpot it. If it's damp let it dry out. If there is actually rot it should be evident...

Re: Seedlings in the winter
I am on my second season growing from seed. I have been starting them in early winter, mainly because I have more time. And when spring comes they have a huge head start and keep right on growing (That was my experience the first season anyway) Second batch will go outside in a few months, when everyt...

Re: Winter is a time to re-pot!
Where I am at,cacti have to come inside early October. With no greenhouse, that means low light, very little water, and relatively cool temps. In theory they are dormant,or growth has all but stopped. So it is a perfect time to re pot. March or April when they come around they are good to go

I agree it's a great time. I have re-potted a few bigger ones and have plans to do several more. And as Steve says. February is TWO months long so there is more time

Re: Seedlings grew inside pod!
I was thinking about posting a thread asking if Escobaria were hard to germinate when I just found this thread. Interesting. I have bought several types of escobaria seeds from Mesa Garden with really poor results, Well missouriensis and vivipara but 2,or 3 kinds of each. I have always had great res...
