Re: Can I prune this Kalanchoe to encourage it to branch out?

Is it possible to cut and root the top, to encourage those small offshoots to grow stronger?

Re: Copiapoa from seed

Hey, Colton, In the same situation here. My seedlings are two months old now, and I've begun hardening with a few hours in increased air circulation, a few hours misted, a few hours out of incubation. Another set is in an intermediate setting with higher humidity, not room dryness, not in enclosed e...

Re: Hana's cacti

I lost an old super kabuto in this morning, which is sown on the photo. The cause of death is rotting bottom. Seed was sown on 24th August 2005 which means the cactus was almost 18 years old. Super kabuto is a small asterias but the cactus on the photo reached to 16 cm in diameter. I wished 20 year...

Re: Lophophores shows after the storm

Hey! I believe that is the correct choice as well, Nachtkrabb. It is kismet for this loph to be in the company of its little ones.

At 15 months old, some of my lophs are now 1.5 to 2.0 cm in diameter. Be patient. I'll be interested in how this progresses--let us know.

Re: Lophophores shows after the storm

Quick afterthought--the seedlings were likely quite sheltered from light and elements; when you replace the potting medium, carefully place fine grit/coarse sand around the seedlings to support them and look to keeping the light exposure gentle. Frank (Hanazano) suggested something similar, and in a...

Re: Lophophores shows after the storm

Guten Morgen, Nachtkrabb-- Such a shame that this great loph was uprooted, but it was the opportunity to discover your new plants. Since it's been loosened already in tipping, would you be able to remove the wall of the pot by cutting it down the corners, tease the two miniatures out very gently wit...

I would re-pot something could be wrong with the soil . One clue the others at the store are also dying. I agree. It will also offer the opportunity to thoroughly clean and examine the adopted child from top to bottom, treating any suspected issues, Fred. You're always one for a challenge, coming u...

Impressive growth over a decade--I like Colin, just as he is. You must be doing something right; Colin looks great. Continue what you're doing. Others should chime in on soil/potting medium, care, and fertilization. Colin flowering is a good sign of great care. If I had the choice, I would transplan...

Re: Cactus sick with some white/beige spots/patches

A very interesting cactus for you to save. LLIFL has some interesting pictures and cultivation notes, particularly for watering, hardiness, and frequent mentions of the potential for rot from overwatering or exposure to cold; one description is very similar to the pictures you posted. Best wishes wi...

Awesome, Fred. Can't wait to see more of the plan as you develop it. Nicely done with finding the right growing cues for those sad pads from a few months ago.

I have to agree with the crowd, Aztek--you are brilliant. Your specimens are perfect, displaying form, culture, art, and philosophy at once. The rarities simply add to the beauty of your collection.

Re: White patches on pads

I tend to agree with Jerry's assessment: the appearance of the white, fuzzy, powdery spots looks like mealies. I was given an Opuntia microdasys six months ago with these, and it took multiple weeks of spraying with an insecticide with isolation to eradicate them. You might want to unpot to check th...
