I found a magnifier app so you can see more details https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/727147534224588807/1132683462483124294/2023-7-23_10-39-1.jpg?width=397&height=676 https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/727147534224588807/1132683462848036955/2023-7-23_10-38-44.jpg?width=397&heig...

Re: This is rust, right?

I don't think either are ''rust'' The top of the plant was damaged a while ago from something. Probably mites or possibly some kind of rot. The other pic is too out of focus. I add two more, does it help? https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/727147534224588807/1132679999544098837/20230723_10245...

This is rust, right?

My cactus started to look extra crispy lately, especially on top and around the new growth. Only the top part is affected. I haven't treated yet, I just want to make sure this is really rust first.Thank you for your help

Re: I think my soilless mix dries to fast for my opuntia

Unfortunately I have to bring it inside during winter cause it won't survive harsh canadian winter temps. It's also very small. Just one paddle with 3 baby paddles growing on top. As long as you have it outside for the spring-summer growing season, you should be fine. Just be aware of the fact that...

Re: I think my soilless mix dries to fast for my opuntia

Opuntia microdasys is very hard to keep in decent shape indoors. Plant thrive outdoors under full sun. https://live.staticflickr.com/3699/10423183094_4cd09f191d_b.jpg Adding to this glochids and size it reaches... we better chose something easier to manage in home conditions. Unfortunately I have t...

Re: I think my soilless mix dries to fast for my opuntia

What do you mean by 'ugly growth'? I think George means that without perfect conditions (and sometimes even with perfect conditions) the pads on some Opuntias shrivel up either partially or fully leaving the plant looking miserable. These are of no use to the plant or the observer so you can cut th...

Re: I think my soilless mix dries to fast for my opuntia

I'm using bonsai jack succulent mix, which works great but after only a week the opuntia gets droopy and starts to wrinkle. For many Opuntia species this condition is rather normal winter time. Some even lay on the ground. Try to tie it to a support or find a colder spot around the walls or corners...

Re: I think my soilless mix dries to fast for my opuntia

I have a small O. microdasys (2 pads) and it hibernated in cool temperatures (5-8°C). It has been wrinkly since december or so and still is. Unless the conditions are right I would hold back on the watering. A picture of the plant in question could be usefull to see what you refer to as wrinkly... ...

Re: Is this rust or something else?

I would stay away from using spring water, as they do contain TDS. OK for drinking, but not for plant use. It also occurred to me that your soil may be the culprit. Too much fertilizer in the soil can lead to a similar condition (excessive salts and other minerals). I steer clear of packaged soil m...

Re: I think my soilless mix dries to fast for my opuntia

Honestly, neither. I know there's a lot of talk on this forum about lightly watering plants through winter to keep the fine roots alive but I'm going to be a contrarian and say don't worry too much about it. To be clear are you talking about Opuntia humifusa? Bc that's the only Opuntia I've kept ov...

Re: Is this rust or something else?

I think you have a common problem that I've seen hundreds of times: calcium carbonate accumulation. The easiest way to prevent this build up, is to either use rain water, distilled water, or use a filter to remove all the TDS (total dissolved solids) from tap water. The plants already affected will...

I think my soilless mix dries to fast for my opuntia

Good morning, my cacti have been kept indoors for the winter with grow lamps because Canadian winter are deadly to my plants. Unfortunately, the coldest the house would get is 20C/68F so I'm pretty sure none of them went dormant. I noticed that my cacti can go more than a month or two without water ...
